conation Mayor Campbell has proclaimed May 25th m Poppy Day 1974 in Brevard, according to The American Legion Auxiliary Unit #88 which sponsors the annual observance. The Proclamation reads as follows: WHEREAS, the American Legion Auxiliary adopted the Poppy as its Memorial flower which pays tribute to the war dead, and aids the living veterans and their families; and WHEREAS, the contributions are used solely for Children and Youth and Rehabilitation in our local Community; NOW THEREFORE, I Charles H. Campbell Mayor of the City of Brevard do hereby pro* claim the Month of May, 1974, as Poppy Month and May 25th as Poppy Day in our Community. Charles H. Campbell _ Mayor ATTEST: Opal C. This is Poppy Day when ev eryone will be requested to wear a "Poppy please”. The small red flowers are a me morial to all deceased veterans, as well as means of contribut ing to the rehabiliation of dis abled veterans and families. All monies collected from this project goes into a private fund for this purpose only. Even though Transylvania is a small county, it has given more than its share of patriotic citizens in the defense of God and country. “So wear a Poppy please on the above date and aid Aux iliary 88 in their loyalty pro gram," the president says. Miss Kathy Rhodes Awarded Degree In Nursing, UNC-C Miss Kathy Rhodes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert J. Rhodes of Brevard, received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on May 12th A ceremony was held on May 11th for the graduate nurses at which they were awarded the school pins for their uniforms and caps. It was announced at this ceremony that Miss Rhodes was among the top six in her nursing class. One must have better than a 3.5 quality point average in the nursing curri culum to obtain this recogni tion. Miss Rhodes has accepted a Job in the operating room at Charlotte Memorial Hospital in Charlotte. We will have some guest speakers on this and it should be of interest to every one. AD land owners are urged to attend. Last Tuesday the Homestead ers met at the Community Cen ter and worked on their recipe books, had a delicious covered dish luncheon and had their regular afternoon monthly meeting afterwards. It was a very enjoyable day, had a good turnout and accomplished a great deal The Hogsed-Raxter Reunion was held at Dunn’s Creek Bap tist Church Sunday. They had a real good turn-out. The Goe pelettes were the guest singers. New officers for the next three years were elected. They are: President. Bill Burrell, husband of Laurel Raxter; Mrs. Cor nelia Hogsed Gravley, Vice President; and Mrs. Lula Hog sed Johnson. Secretary-Treasur er. Mr. Clifford Raxter was the oldest Raxter attending, and Mrs. Jessie Hogsed Lance the oldest Hogsed. The beautiful flowers in church Sunday were, placed in memory of Carmen and Leslie Hogsed by their children. There was a working in the cemetery lut Thursday night. Several of the men in the com munity mowed it and it looks real idee. Paid Morgan escorted Miss Diane Hogaed of Cherryfidd to the Jr.-Sr. Prom in Rosman Saturday night. They had a great time and really made a handsome couple. Saturday evening *0 the chil dren and grandchttdreft of Lula Johnson had supper with her in honor of her birthday. Many happy returns, Lula. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Wyckoff from Miami, Florida, are visit ing a few days with their broth er and family, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Gustafson on See Oft Mtn. James and Deborah Boat wright from Athens, Georgia, are spending a few days on See Off visiting with his mother, Mrs. Ann Boatwright. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Corn and family and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hightower enjoyed a coobout up in the forest over the weekend. Henry Vorus from Atlanta, ia., is visiting his parents, Mr. nd Mrs. W. R. The program will include a slide show and discussion of various aspects of land use planning as applied to the situation in Tran sylvania County. Those who want to know more about land use planning are urged to at tend. Preceding this program the several committees of the TEA win report on their activities. Other items of business will in clude the planning of another recycling day for June (not May 24th and 25th as previous ly announced), and the discus sion of how to encourage stalled national environmental legisla tion.
