Wildlife Afield How’s Your Wildlife Knowledge? Let’s take a quick quiz to see bow much you know about the wildlife conservation program in North Carolina. Here’s a hint. If you get all these questions right without guessing, you’re unusually well informed because some of these are difficult. 1) TRUE or FALSE The daily bag limit on doves is set each year by the N. C. Wildlife Resources Commission following a study of the dove population by wildlife biologists. 2) TRUE or FALSE If you catch someone hunting on your private, posted property, the best thing to do is call your local Wildlife Protector. 3) TRUE or FALSE If you pay taxes in North Carolina, you are automatically contributing to state-supported wildlife programs to conserve fish and Home worth more now: Just a few dollars more increases your coverage. If fire destroyed your home, would your insurance cover building at today’s inflated prices? For very little more per month, Allstate can give you adequate coverage for “Allstate See or phone ALVIN HEALY Sears Roebuck & Company Brevard Plaza 883-3611 game populations and im prove hunting and fishing. 4) TRUE or False The deer population in North Carolina is undergoing a slow but steady decline as a result of changing habitat, poaching and hunting. 5) TRUE or FALSE If you like to hunt and fish, a career as a Wildlife Protector (game warden) is a good way to combine business nnd pleasure. 6) TRUE or FALSE A law-abiding sportsman who follows all state and federal laws governing hunting and fishing should never have to worry about violating any law pertaining to these sports. Okay, all finished? Here are the answers. 1) This one is FALSE. The daily bag limit on doves is set by Federal authorities under the U. S. Bureau of Fish and Wildlife. All migratory birds, including waterfowl, are regulated by Federal authority, though states may select certain options on some species. 2) Again, FALSE. Though a Wildlife Protector may be able to assist you by verifying that someone is indeed hun ting on your property, he cannot make an arrest for trespassing. The Wildlife Commission has no authority over trespass laws, so if someone is hunting on your property without permission, your best bet would be to call the Sheriff. 3) FALSE. No state taxes are channeled to support wildlife conservation programs in North Carolina. Such programs are paid for primarily by license fees from hunters and fishermen. 4) FALSE. The deer population is actually in creasing in North Carolina, and is in fact higher now than at any time in recorded history largely as a result of wildlife management programs supported by hunting license sales. 5) FALSE. I'll bet this one fooled you. Ask any Wildlife Protector and he’ll quickly tell you that he’s so busy enforcing wildlife laws during prime hunting and fishing times that he rarely ever has a chance to go hunting and fishing. 6) FALSE. Perhaps this wasn’t a fair question, but although a knowledge and willingness to abide by all state and federal laws governing hunting and fishing is very commendable, it isn’t enough to keep you out of possible trouble. Some communities and counties in North Carolina have passed local laws pertaining tc hunting and fishing which may affect only a small area, but the sportsman is responsible for knowing about them too. That’s it. How did you do? If you got them all correct, take a bow. You know more about wildlife conservation programs and laws in this state than 90 percent of the rest of us. What’s that? You say you didn’t get many right? Well, don’t worry. You’ve got a lot of company, and that’s the reason for the quiz. Wc wanted you to know the answers because the better informed you are about wildlife programs, the better those wildlife programs will be. Hunters Need Hermits For Parkway Parking Deer hunting season opens November 25 James R. Brotherton, Acting Superintendent of the Blue Ridge Parkway, reminded sportsmen who wish to use Parkway overlooks for parking during the season that they must obtain a special Hunter Parking and Crossing Permit. “These permits are free,” said Brotherton, “but they must be obtained in person by each hunter. No telelphone or mail requests will be honored.” Permits are available at the District Ranger Office at Oteen, from any Park Ranger in the Asheville District of the Parkway, the U. S. Forest District Ranger’s office near Brevard, and at Parkway headquarters on the seventh floor of the Northwestern Bank Building in downtown Asheville. Brotherton recommends that hunters obtain parking permits at their earliest convenience. “We expect scattered violations,” he said, “but we hope that hunters will take the time to pick up permits before the beginning of deer hunting season. Those hunters parking without a permit will be subject to citations by Park way rangers.” When you think of prescriptions, think of VARNER’S, adv ' America’s Great Oil Heaters BEAUTIFUL CABINETS! Again, this was an opportunity which had to be decided upon very quickly as it affected the plans for a new elementary school. “Of these three projects, the jail was the most costly and to us logically the one to submit for a bond issue. Personally, I think it would have been nice to have voted on all of these issues, but state law does not permit one to simply put questions to a ballot. “If no financing were needed, there could be no referendum.’’ Yule Parade —Continued From Page One featuring that theme in the parade. State University By M. E. GARDNER Dwarf apple ..ees are produced in the nursery to meet a demand for trees that require less growing space than stan dard trees but yet can sup ply the needs of the family for fresh apples and ap ples for processing. Dwarf trees begin bear ing much earlier than standard sorts and the dwarfing does not affect the size or quality of the fruit produced. Dwarfing rootstocks for apples have been investi gated more thoroughly than for other fruits. The East Mailing Research Station in England has done outstanding research in this field and has pro duced rootstocks with dif ferent degrees of dwarf ing. They are classified as very dwarfing and semi dwarfing. We will stay with the full dwarfing types because these are the most satisfactory around the home where space is usually limited. Trees may be identified at the nursery by variety and by the East Mailing Roman numeral assigned to the degree of dwarfing. Mailing IX has been widely tested and is con sidered to be the best of the full-dwarfing stocks. The trees will grow six to eight feet high in 15 or 20 years if they are plant ed in good soil and given proper care. Such trees usually produce about a bushel or more of apples each year. If you can’t get varie ties grafted on Mailing IX, you may be able to get Mailing VIII or VII. Dwarf trees do best in soil that is moderately open and well drained — not in heavy clay or soil that is too open and sandy to retain moisture. The full dwarfs need only 10 to 12 feet between trees; or you may be able to find use for trees in your landscape. Dig a hole plenty large to accommodate the roots without crowding. Set the tree as deep as it grew in the nursery row. You can tell by observing the soil stain line at the base of the trunk. As you dig the hole, separate top and sub soil. Place the topsoil around the roots and pack firmly Add subsoil and continue to pack soil to about three inches of the top. Finish off with loose soil. If the tree is a single stem or whip, head it back to 30 inches. This should be all the pruning neces sary the first year. Pro vide firm stake support for two or three years until • the roots become firmly es tablished in the soil. This is essential.
