RUSSELL WILLIS Pastor, First Baptist Church The role of the Sunday School in reaching people with the gospel is usually un derestimated. Many people that have attended church faithfully and that have long supported the programs fail to recognize the effectiveness of the Sunday School. Now to be sure, the Sunday School is not an answer to all that troubles the church. It is not a magic program that will insure th“ success of the church. It is a powerful tool that the modern church has developed to carry out the Great Com mission. Indeed, few tools in the history of the church even approach the effectiveness of the Sunday School in reaching people. The record seems almost too plain. It is estimated that 70 per cent of all the present protestant church members in America came first under the influences of the Sunday School. In some Sunday School oriented denominations, the percentage is a> per cent. A pastor that wants to see his church membership grow would do well to review his use of this important tool. A few churches have been built on preaching, a few on music, a few on social ministry, but thousands on Sunday School. It seems to be an axiom that wherever there is a strong Sunday School, there will be other strong ministry programs. As more and more churches discover this most effective tool of church growth, bigger and better churches can be expected. Transylvania county churches participating in the “Back to Sunday School” campaign reported the following attendance for Sunday, Jan. 19: Calvary Baptist 186 Brevard-Davidson River Presbyterian 156 Brevard Wesleyan 143 Carr’s Hill Baptist 92 Sacred Heart Catholic Church 90 Cherryfield Baptist 109 Church of God 145 English Chapel 10 Enon Baptist 103 First Baptist 337 First United Methodist 214 Grace Baptist 134 Little River Baptist 132 Morningside Baptist 96 Mt. Mr. Taylor told the people how and what to do to get started on getting the roads to where they will be in better shape. They are impossible some times. We want to thank Mr. Taylor for coming to the Community Meeting, and also we would like to thank Jackie Hall for coming over. Rev. Cecil Robinson brought the message Sunday at 11 a.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church. Employment Shows Big Dip —Continued From Page One Christmas surge of 6,000 jobs in retail trade from November to December, Creel stated. However, compared with December, 1973, total em ployment in retail trade was down by 12,700. The factory workweek dropped to 37.6 hours in December — the shortest weekly average for the month of December on record, Creel said. The shortened workweek — down 3.1 hours from the 40.7 hour average of December, 1973 — brought average weekly earnings of the State’s factory production workers down to (128.53, or only $1.20 higher than a year ago despite many wage boosts and cost-of living increases granted during the year 1974, Creel reported. December’s average hourly earnings were up two cents to $3.42, said Commissioner Creel, but the apparent gain was due almost entirely to layoffs of workers having less seniority and therefore lower hourly earnings. With these lower-wage groups out of the picture, earnings of the remaining workers average out slightly higher, Creel noted.
