X VmI rMmfortbU Sltntlon and How II Escaped From IU "At the rear of a farmhouse that I was looking, around one night said the retired burglar, "I found An extension containing a einglo room, that appeared to be u-ed as a wash room. I thought if I went in through this extension I should bo less likely to wake up the. folks in the house, and o I got in at a rear window and started for a door at the other end deuing into the main part, which I hoped to find unlocked, but I never really did j find out whether it was unlocked or not, for when I bad got about lialf way across tho room I stepped through a hole in the floor and dropjKil into a cistern. "I bUpiKe that of all the uncom fortable, places a man can get into one cf the most uncomfortable is a cistern. It is a very difficult place to Ket out of, and it may be impos sible to Kt out of it without help. The water in this cistern was just over ray head, but I could pwim, and the water wasn't very cold. I kept afloat and felt around the walls for something to climb out by. I did find something, the. pipe from the pumiv but it wasn't of any use to me, for it left the cistern just xvhere tho walls began to arch over to form'the top. If it had run up under the arch a little, it might h:ive bclied me to reach tho edge of the openinjr. but it didn't. It started out from the top of tho straight wall. It w. on the hide toward the Isot so, tu: l I mimko this cistern muft h-ive Ik-oti outdoor., ami they l.iiiU the extension over it. I l.-pt,iaddling all the time to keep my he:. l nWve water, and every row ai.d then I looked up at the '4nim: I had dropped through. I iul lm ike out tho outlineof it by the Harlight in the washroom, and I wi-hed they hadn't left tho rover off. And how I did wish I,could get mv hands on that, rim! But the nearest I could get to it was alxnit two fret away. I found that by making a great effort I could reduce that distance to about lJi feet, but that was nil, and it might as well have Veen 1 miles. "Paddlinc around in the water or.e of my fwot struck my tool bag. Iving on the lmttoui, "where 1 uau dropi-e-I it when I first went down. The littlo bound from that, instead of from the floor of tho-cistern, which I had touched a few times be fore, threw my head a little higher out of water than usual, and then 1 found the 'satchel with liothfeot and fetd on it. That gave me the fnt ret I had had since I dropped into the cistern. It raised me up so that my head was clear of the water down to jn-t lielow my mouth, and I could keep in that position without very much effort and hn at he easily. It was a very great relief. "Tin n, I of course, .there was a chance to think things over with some kind of comfort. I had my jimmy in my b;:g, a useful tool in many ways, and no doubt I could have j:ot out of the cistern by the aid of it, j but the work w ould have been ; very difficult, and it would probably .have taken too long, and as a- matter of fact I had already thought of a very much simpler way of getting out. Standing on the bag not only raised my hee.d above tho water; but, of course, it raised me just so much nearer tho op ning at the top of the cistern. If I could get something a little higher still to stand on, a foot higher, or even less than that; I could reach the rim, and, of course, the thing to do was to end this bag up ar.d stand on that.i This seemed so extremely sim pie that you may wonder I hadn't thought of it l-efore, but the falling into the cistern had Urn in the na ture of a surprise to inc. and I hadn't got rrrnnd to this idea yet. I would h:;ve'tho::s.ht of it in time, even if I hru'ift hajiCT.cd to strike the bag wiih my lit t "Veil, I bal.inc -I my.-elf on the bag rs it ivr. h until I had gut a gooi r".-t. i-.nd then I bent down in tho water and erded the bag up end'got one fMt on it to hold it. and then I stood up in the water again and got the other .foot on it. Then I found I co;ild reach within six or eight inches of the rim of the cistern. But it was a mighty shaky'supjKirt, rigid enough iu itself, with the bones in it; but, nut fixed, it was wabbly and of no ustj unless I could get it right in line with my'lnxly when I jump ed. But I steadied it up under my feet and trued it up the best I could and made a spring from it. I caught the rim of the cistern with both hands, and then I raided myself up and chinned it. Then I got my right elliow up , over on to the floor, and after that it wasn't verydeng before I had worked myswlf up over the edge and out, but I didn't try to do any mora work that night. Fjymj Tire 'Wornhlpers In Aaim. According to the story told by two Danish ofiScers, Messrs. Oloufsen and Philipsen, who have just re turned from the Pamir country in Apia, bringing several hundred pho tographs of people and tcenery not before visited by Europeans, there exist in that elevated part of the world tribes of very small men, who worship lire and are entirely unciv ilized, and whose domestic animals are at least as remarkable as the If ople themselves for their small size.
