BISHOP DENNY IS HEARD AT SHELBY Shelby, Jan. 27.—Bishop Collins Denny, of the Southern Methodist church, was heard by a large num ber of Shelby people and others from the surrounding churches in an able sermon Sunday in the handsome new Central Methodist church at the morning service. Rev. S. C. Kirkpatrick, presiding elder of the Shelby district, and Rev. W. R. Ware, of Forest City, were also visitors of the church during the day, Rev. Mr. Ware preaching at the evening service. The latter is a na tive of Shelby and the father of Rev. Dwight Ware, the young ministerial student who attained outstanding honors at Vanderbiit University. English Clergyman—"And when you arrive in London, my dear lady, don't fail to see St. Paul's and West minster Abbey." Fair American—"You bet, I'll rat tle these off sure, but what I've been hankering to see ever since I was knee-high to a grasshopper is the Church of England."—Exchange. : FOREST CITY COUREIR WASHINGTON AND LINCOLN February is the birth month of two ! of the greatest men of all history, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We hear much about the • cherry tree and the boy who could t not tell a lie; but let us remember that Lincoln was known as "Honest . Abe" and many stories are told of , his perfect honesty and uprightness of character. It seems that perfect honesty is the handmaid of true greatness. The reason why these men are held in such high esteem by Hie peo ple of this country and have won such a place in the hearts oi peop.e *n lands across the seas is not because of their fame as warriors or states men but because of their attain ments in character and true man hood. Washington won great battles un der heavy handicaps, but what peo ple must love to remember is that at Valley Forge he suffered! with his men and when the hour was darkest he was found in the forest on his knees pouring out his soul to God in prayer. He was a real brother and a true Christian. Lincoln was a great statesman and carried the day in spite of criticism and hindrances on the part of those who ought to have been his best help ers; he held to his policies in spite of contrary advice and finally won the war and the freedom of the slaves. But what men of today most love to remember is not the victories over his opponents but his brotherliness, his human kindness to an enemy as well as a friend and his ifsep sym pathy for all the needy and sorrow ing. If the characters of such men as these could be kept before the boys and girls of today as their heroes and examples, rather than prize fighters and movie actors and actresses, many of whom have such vile reputations, the outlook for the nation would be brighter and the kingdom of God ad vanced much more rapidly.
