ERWIN MISS UNA EDWARDS Associate Editors OBSERVES MOTHERS DAY Last Sunday was observed at the local Baptist church as Mothers' Day and Baptist Hospital Day. The of fering of the Sunday school was giv en to the Baptist Hospital located at Winston-Salem. Following the Sun day school the pastor, Dr. Chas. H. Stevens, preached to a large audience one of the finest sermons on mother that the writer has ever been priv ileged to hear. Three members were received Sunday for baptism. New members are coming in all along at most of the services. On Sunday evening Rev. W. B. Jenkins visited here and preached a fine sermon after which the pastor administered the ordinance of bap tism to eight new converts. During this ordinance appropriate music was played softly on the organ and many said it was one of the most impres sive as well as beautiful services of the kind they ever witnessed. UNION SERVICES Dr. Stevens is attending the South ern Baptist Convention at Memphis, Tenn. Next Sunday morning at the close of the Sunday school the usual offering will be taken but there will be no sermon and the people will have an opportunity to visit the Methodist church. On Sunday evening at the usual preaching hour there will be a song service. The choir and the members of the local Methodist church and the Avondale Baptist 1 church have been invited to sing at this time. Of course all other visit ors are very cordially welcomed. The State College Summer School begins on June 15 and closes July 24. The announcement of courses has been published and may be secured by those wishing to attend. C. J * LOCAL 3 1 HAPPENINGS The many friend's of Mr, and Mrs. Chas. Swofford regret their removal from Cliffside to Shelby. Mr. Swof ford has been connected with the furniture store here for a number of years. He will go into the mercan tile business in Shelby. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Bridges and Mrs. J. Y. Padgett spent Sunday in Gaffney, S. C. Misses Marjorie Hord and Merle Wimberly spent the week-end at King's Mountain. The roller mills here have installed one of the most complete corn mills in this section of the state. They are also making a fine grade of flour. Mr. and Mrs. V. F. McMahan of Forest City visited Mr. and Mrs. Jay Cole last Saturday. Miss Ada Bridges spent the week ! end at her home at Forest City. Mr. Roy Waters, Associational B. 'Y. P. U. and Sunday school worke . will address the teachers' meeting rt the 'local Baptist church on Thursday night of this week. It is hoped that every teacher and officer will be pre sent. Quite a number attended the Me morial Day races at Charlotte Mon day afternoon. Among them were Messrs. Clyde Edwards, Mack and Ralph Duncan, B. J. Davidson, A. T. Humphries, B. F. Biggerstaff and Shirley White. The County Medical Society which met here on Tuesday of last week had a very interesting meeting. The secretary of the Memorial building announces that fifty new books have been added to the Li brary. About fifty more will be add ed at an early date. The Henderson-Gunn Tent Theater is located here this week on the old school house lot. Messrs. Z. 0. Jenkins and John G. Roach went to Spartanburg Mon day to attend the Scenic Highway meeting. Misses Melrose Hawkins and Alice Carpenter of Limestone College spent the week-end here at their re spective homes. Miss Carpenter had for her guests two friends from Limestone College, Misses Mildred Jeffers and Berta Williams. Miss Edith Greene and Mr. W. W. Winn visited Chimney Rock Sunday. Messrs. DeWitt Causby and Baxter Splawn, of Greenville, S. C., spent the week-end here. Messrs. Robert Greene and Hoyle Black have about recovered from their injuries received a week ago when coming form Shelby their car left the road near town and collided with a telephone pole. Jen kins and Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Owens of Avondale. Mr. Grover C. Haynes is expected to arrived today (Tuesday) from St. Petersburg, Fla., where he and his family have spent the winter. Mr. Haynes will attend the annual meet ing of the stockholders of the Cliff side Mills which will be held here Wednesday. Miss Eunice White spent Sunday in Avondale. Miss Virginia Padgett visited in Rutherfordton and South Mountain last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Zeb Freeman of the Mt. Vernon section spent Sunday here. : The local high school team played the Forest City high school ball team .the game to a close as the locals weio jen Monday afternoon. Rain brought !at bat in the sixth inning. The score was 4 to 0 in favor of the locals. Little Miss Mary Lewis and Mas ter R. K. Wilson, of Shelby, spent jthe week-end here with Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Mr. and Mrs. Myles Haynes ac companied by Mrs. Wayne Haynes, of Avondale, visited Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Carpenter at Rutherfordton, Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Hamrick spent the week-end at Boiling Springs. Several from here attended the music festival at Spartanburg last week. Mr. and Mrs. P. D. Padgett moved Monday to a farm near Frog Level. Mr. Padgett has been here almost as long as the town has been in exist ence and has many friends who re gret to loose them. Mr. Robert James and daughters, Misses Geneva and Pearl, spent Sun day at Spindale. Mr. J. Y. Padgett returned last week from a visit to friends at Mor ganton. AVONDALE NEWS Avondale, May 11.—Mother's Day was observed at the Methodist church Sunday morning. A very impressive sermon was preached on the subject "Mother." Special music was render ed by the Cliffside and Avondale choirs. A large crowd attended this service, consisting of members from here and also the Cliffside Methodist church. Rev. Heckard made it clear to us that "mother" is the greatest gift from God. The revival of the Methodist church is still in progress. Large crowds are attending each service and already several members have ; been added to the church, j Commencement exercises will be given at the town hall Thursday and ; Friday nights, May 21-22. i Several from here attended Memo | rial services at Mt. Vernon Sunday. Miss Maud Moorehead, of Latti | more, is visiting relatives here. | Mr. A. E. Honeycutt is at the I Rutherfordton hospital where he un j derwent an operation for appendici tis. We hope he will soon be able to return home. Rev. W. B. Jenkins will leave this ' week for Memphis, Tenn., where he will attend the Southern Baptist Convention. CLIFFSIDE SCHOOL NEWS ■ The annual recitation contest will be held in the school auditorium on Tuesday night, May 12th. The con test promises to be a most interest ing one this year. Nineteen girls will take part. The gold medal is given by Mr. B. D. Wilson of Ruther fordton. Mr. Wilson has given the medal each year and continues to give it even though he is now a citi zen of Rutherfordi,on. The school certainly appreciates the interest of such men as Mr. Wilson. r ihe boys have their declama tion contest Thursday night, May 14th. The medal for .he boys is given by Mr. Kendrick, superintendent of Ciirl'side mills. Much interest is also shown in the boys' contest. Possibly fifteen boys will participate. Rehearsals for the commencement play are in progress now. The play, "Aaron Slick From Pumpkin Crick" is a comedy in three acts, and will be one of the best ever given by the local school. The play will be given Saturday night, May 23rd at 8:00 o'clock. Admission will be only 15 and 25 cents. The local Collins- Moore orchestra will furnish music between acts. The school had a book day last week and over eleven hundred books were added to the school library. The room contributing the largest num ber was given a half holiday. The tenth grade with 273 volumes won the holiday. HOPEWELL NEWS Ellenboro, R-2, May 11. —The far mers throughout this section were I delighted with the nice shower of | rain that fell last night. Everybody is invited to attend [and bring plenty of flowers and well filled baskets. Miss Myrtice Doty gave a party at her home Saturday night in honor of her friends. A large crowd -'t tended and all reported a fine time. The daughter of Mrs. Bell Kanipe, who has been on the sick list, is im proving we are glad to note. Miss Alma Robbins spent Sunday with Miss Esther Spratt. Several from around here have been attending the services at Sandy Run Baptist church. Miss Estelle Spratt spent Saturday night with Miss Myrtice Doty. Mr. John White, of Georgia, is visiting at the home of Mr. J. L. Robbins. Mr. Virgil Hawkins and Miss Eula Gordon surprised their many friends by motoring to Caroleen last Thurs day and getting married. Mr. Haw kins is the son of Mr. Sidney Haw kins and Mrs. Hawkins is the charm ing and talented daughter of Mr. L. R. Gordon, of near Hollis. ADVERTISING KEEPS LOCAL TRADE AT HOME Merchants of Greensboro were much disturbed by the reported amount of money sent out of that city for purchases from outside points largely through mail order houses. Quite a campaign was put on to ac quaint people with local merchants and prices with resulting good effect. It is felt that the best way to keep the local trade of Forest City at home is to make full use of the means of acquainting local residents with the advantages of buying at hom-.
