SPARTANBURG FAIR SECTION SPARTANBURG COUNTY FAIR OPENED TUESDAY CLEMSON COLLEGE EXHIBITS AND HORSE SHOW TO BE NEW FEATURES ADDED THIS YEAR Appeal To Farmers Of County Will Be Found—All Build ings Will Be Open At Night For First Time. Spartanburg, S. C., Oct. 27.—A total atendance of possibly 125,- 000 is expected to attend the Spar tanburg county fair, which opens to day for four big days—Oct. 27, 28, 29 and 30. The addition of the horse show and free vaudeville acts at night is expected to attract num bers who have heretofore not at tended. There is no event in this section bf the Palmetto state that attracts people as does the local county fair. People from all sections of South Carolina and parts of North Carolina •ome to the city to attend the fair. New and enlarged exhibits as well as the added vaudeville acts will attract people who have never before attempted to attend the fair, it is thought. Previous to the 1925 fair no attractions has been displayed at night and a number of the ex hibits have been closed, but the open ing of all buildings and the added attractions at night will be a great drawing card. The horse show which has never before been atempted will attract more people, according to fair offi cials. The many equestrians of the section who are interested in the horse show will make an effort to see the night performances. This will be held in the center of the race track. The football game between Clem son College and Wofford College which will be held Thursday morn ign is expected to draw many young people interested in athletics as well as the usual fair attending crowds. The most notable addition made this year is the agricultural exhibit of Clemson College, which will be placed in the industrial building at the right of the ground entrance. Authorities at the college have here tofore held that they could not place exhibits at county fairs, but they decided this year that they were neglecting opportunities for reaching many up-state farmers by not participating in the local fair. They therefore agreed to set up a complete agricultural exhibit here, and in addition to send high-bred cattle, bogs and sheep to this city. Another departure from former customs decided on this year is night as well as day exhibits. Re duced entrance fees will be charged after 6 p. m. each night, and all ex hibits will be open for inspection. Brilliant lights have been placed in all buildings and on the grounds to enable night operation to be carried out. A night horse show is another feature added this year. This will be held in the paddock Wednesday and Thursday nights, beginning at 7:30 o'clock. Large crowds are expected daily from Rutherford County, which al ways sends a large delegation to the Spartanburg Fair. MYSELF "I have to live with myself, and so I want to be fit for myself to know. I want to be able as days go by, always to look myself straight in the eye; I don't want to stand with the setting sun, and hate myself for the things I've done. I want to go out with my head erect I want to de serve all men's respect; but here in the struggle for fame and self, I want to be able to like myself. I don't want to look at myself and know that I'm bluster and bluff and empty show. I never can hide my self from me; I see what others may never see; I know what others may never see; I know what others may never know; I never can fool my self, and so, whatever happens, I want to be, self respecting and con science free."—Exchange. We have four new departments in the high school curriculum this year. They are Home Economics, Agricul ture, Commercial course and Public School Music. Under Home Econo mics we have food, clothing, and house management. Miss Bell, be sides having several classes of school girls, has a class composed of wom en from Alexander and town. The agricultural department is composed of two classes each con taining about fifty boys. About twelve of these boys are going to the State Fair as judges on Wednesday to remain until Saturday. We have in the commercial course typewriting, shorthand and bookkeep ing. The students who apply them selves will be ready for positions as stenographers and bookkeepers by June. From four to five daily Miss Huggins holds a class for the business people of Forest City. In our public school music Miss Wilder is leading us to a greater un derstanding and appreciation cf good music. We expect great things from our Music Department. The Glee Club has been organized and is progressing rapidly. Every boy and girl who has a voice should try to become a member. They hope to give an operetta or musical comedy some time during the year. If you wish to play a musical in strument here is your opportunity. See Miss Wilder and line up at once with the orchestra. Miss Wilder is also supervising the music in the grammer school. A vio lin class has been organized in the sixth and seventh grades and is doing nicely. FORWARD CHANGES IN OUR HIGH SCHOOL No Longer Forest City High School, But a Consolidated District School. Few can realize the enormity of the improvements that have recently been made in this high school. About fifty years ago then; stood, on this same spot, a small two-room wooden school house. From all over the county students came as boaid ers, to attend this school, where they might receive instruction in "reading, writing and 'Rithmetic." Forest City had the best school in the county. Today, as then, Forest City claims the best all-round high school in the county. Five other schools have consolidated with ours and every day a bus comes in from Bostic, Alexan der, Mt. Pleasant, etc. And now our high school represents not only For est City, but every school in the Cool Springs district. As a result of this consolidation, we have a beautiful school building nearing completion. The attendance has been increased about 200 and the faculty has been considerably en larged, so that now we belong to the all-Southern list of high schools. Home Economics, Commercial and Agricultural departments have been added to the regular high school course. We even claim a sick room where the wounded and ailing may find refuge. With this increase in attendance with the addition to the faculty and courses and with the best building in the county, should we not expect one of the most successful school years in the history of the Cool Springs district? Last Monday morning saw the breaking ground for the new high school athletic field. Forest City teams this year will be favored when it comes to a place to "show off" their athletic ambition for the new NEW ATHLETIC FIELD FOREST CITY, NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY, OCT. 29, 1925 field will be a combination for foot ball and baseball, measuring ap proximately 300 by 400 feet.
