AN ADVANCING REG
ION
Progress in that section of
North Carolina between Cliff
side, Forest City, Rutherford
ton and Chimney Rock is as pro
nounced as in any section of the
Old North State.. For many
years the mills of that section
have given it distinction in
industry, but with highway de
velopment such as the section
experienced within the last
few years the towns of the
region have grown rapidly,
small industries appear and the
great development at Lake
Lure has brought into existence
a resort destined to play an im
portant part in the region's ex
pansion.—Spartanburg Herald.

PICNIC AT LAKE

North Carolina League is Host

Lake Lure, July 25. —In the cool
shade of the grove which surrounds
the Bottomless Pools at Lake Lute,
a crowd of 2,200 persons, composed
of delegates of the National Building

Asheville, gathered Wednesday after
noon, July 20 for an old-fashioned
barbecue. The North Carolina League
of Building and Loan associations
was host for the occasion.
A long pit, dug into the ground
and covered with a grill, furnished
meats of many varieties, done to a

woods, was forced to seek what seats
it could find.
Before the barbecue dinner was
completed the thirty-five pipers of
the Oklahoma City kilted lasses be
gan their concert. Standing at atten
tion in the center of the picnic
ground, they played for more than a
half-hour until the speeches began.

L. Kirkpatrick, of Charlotte, far
famed for his oratorical powers. Col.
Kirkpatrick dwelt at length on the
virtues of North Carolina. He fol
lowed the state from the days of re
construction to its present economic
greatness. He cited the growth of
good roads and schools.
He rejoiced that North Carolina
had been so fortunate as to have
the optional convention of building
and loan men and he praised the work
of George Wooten, of Hickory, N.
C., in bringing the convention to
Asheville. C. C. Knight, of Asheville,
was extolled for his work in arrang
ing the barbecue. Col. Kirkpatrick
was introduced by O. C. Erwin, of
Rutherfordton.
Sam P. Burton, of Asheville, wel
comed the crowd to Lake Lure and
to Chimney Rock on the part of Dr.
L. B. Morse, head of the Lake Lure
development, who could not attend.

kind to come here to live.
C. E. Redpker, of Windsor, Ont.,

Canadian border city for their next
convention.
