Hollis, Jan. 6. —Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. S. P. Irvin near -Hollis Monday, December 30 at 11 o'clock for Mrs. Elizabeth Irvin, wife of Mr. James Irvin, who preceded her to the grave about 18 years ago. Mrs. Irvin caught on fire at her home December 23, arid seriously burned, was carried to the Shelby hospital and died Saturday night, Dec. 28. These surviving her are her sons and daughters: Mrs. T. C. Stroud and S. J. Irvin of near Hollis; Mr. G. A. Irvin of Forest City, Mrs. Roy Fortune of Golden Valley, Mr?. Biddie Haynes of Alabama, and one step daughter, Mrs. A. J. Dedmon of Shelby. All were present at the funeral except Mrs. Biddie Haynes of Alabama. She also has 26 grand children and five great grand chil dren. Mrs. Irvin was born and rear ed in the Hollis community and will be greately missed by her com munity and host of friends. She joined Big Springs Baptist church when about 18 years of age and lived a devoted member on up to her death. She was buried in the Big Springs cemetery. Those carrying the flow ers were: Misses Laura Mae and PearJ Irvin, Mary Fortune, Ruth Dedmon, Mrs. J. D. Grayson and Mrs. Van Stroud. The pall bearers were: Messrs. Matt. Van, Emmett Stroud, Christy Irvin, Everette Toms and G. Dedmon. She had one "brother and three sisters, all of which preceded her to the grave. CIVES MONEY VALUE OF JAPAN CLOVER A crop of lespedeza turned under i* worth $lB an acre as a fertilizer or corn. This is the value of the crop as determined by a demonstration onducted by Andrew Jeffries of Me bane in Alamance county. "This crop of lespecleza was plant ed on wheat in the early spring of 1927," says Enos G. Blair, exten sion agronomist at State College. 'The soil was typical, sandy, tobac co land. The lespedeza was left on he soil until the fall of 1928 when it was plowed under. However, in 1927 and 1928, tobacco fertilized with manure and 1000 pounds an acre f an 8-3-5 mixture was grown on , he land next to the lepedeza. The soil yas exactly similar and not even a itch or turn row separated the two rops. In 1929, corn was planted af er both the lespedeza and the tobac o and fertilized with 200 pounds an ere of a 9-2-3 mixture. After the espedeza, the corn made 43.4 bush jels of grain an acre and after tobac -o, made 25.3 bushels an acre. The increase of 18.1 bushels valued at ne dollar a bushel was due entirely o the crop of lespedeza turned un der." Mr: Blair says that some may ar gue that the land might have been 1 rofitably used in producing high pric- d tobacco instead of the lespedeza; ut, the fact remains that those coun ties which go heavily into tobac-- o production are the ones from which the cry of "hard times" is eard. On the other hand, those coun ties planting comparatively large per centages of cultivated lands to le umes to build up their soils are solid ly prosperous. Even though the agri\ul(ture of the diversified counties is less spec acular than that of some of the money crop counties, these diversi ed sections have a stable and profit- ble agriculture that is furnishing a ood living without the great val lays of despair and the few peaks of j rosperity, says Mr. Blair. Nothing so unusual about a lie de tector, as used in a recent murder case. Many a local citizen can tell he has been married to one for some twenty or thirty years. Some rare old coins were recent ly found on a golf course. A friend rises to remark that antiques may be dug up on our own course here most any time. It is said that the price of a new piano with two sets of keys and chimes and various other attach ments is prohibitive. Let's hope it stays that way.
