Tinsley left Sunday for Warrenton, N. C., where he will oversee new machinery being in stalled in a new laundry. Mr. Tins ley will be gone three weeks. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Roy R. Morris re turned Saturday from a bridal trip to Wilmington and Raleigh. They ex pect to go t 0 housekeeping on Ar lington avenue in a few days. * * * Mrs. Chas. A. Ford and son Char les, accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Moore as far as Rock Hill, S. C* and Char lotte, where they spent Friday with Mrs. Moore's father, Mr. Geo. H. Harrill and Mrs. Harrill. * * * Miss Cleo Young left Wednesday to visit Mrs. Clyde Hoey in Shelby. Miss Young will later go t c Kings Mountain and High Point where she will lecture on her missionary work in Africa. S. Gamble, of Wadesboro, were guests of relatives here for the week-end. Mr., Gamble,, formerly of Forest City, has been connected with the Wade Mfg. Co., for several years. * * * Miss Mary Agnes Lattimore, of Lattimore, is visiting Miss Meriam Green here this week. SURPRISE BIRTHDAY FOR MR. W. P. WATKINS A number of friends and relatives gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Watkins last Sunday to celebrate Mr. Watkin's birthday. FIRE DESTROYS SUPERINTENDENT'S HOME Fire, breaking out at about 9 o'- clock Tuesday night, destroyed the residence occupied by Night Supt. G. V. Frye, of Florence Mills. The fire originated in the kitchen, pos sibly from a defective flue. Several nearby residences were only saved by hard work on the part of the fire men. Mr. Frye suffered a total loss of his household goods, not. having carried any insurance. The building was the property of Florence Mills, the loss being covered by blanket insurance carried by this company on its property. The building was val ued at approximately SB,OOO. THRIFT CHECK CAMPAIGN CLOSES AT ROMINA THEATRE The thrift check campaign, inau gurated by the Romina Theatre some weeks ago, came to a close Monday noon. A number of young ladies were in the contest. The winners were: Miss Marie Hughes, first prize, $lO in gold. Miss Rose Suber, second priz», two month's pass. Miss Madge Moore, third prize one pass. It is hard to believe the American boy is deteriorating as long as he continues to welcome the circus with a golden glow on his face. Regardless of weather conditions, a more determined fight will be made on the boll weevil in Cumberland county than ever before, reports the farm agent. GOLDEN VALLEY Bostic, R-3, July 7.—Crops are needing rain very much in this sec tion. Although they are looking good considering their chance for rain. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Houser receiv ed a message from their son, Mr. | Mai Houser, of Asheville, last w r eek that their little four year old son, Claude, could live only a few hours. Mrs. J. D. Hduser accompanied by her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Bedford Beatty, of Spindale, went to Ashe ville Wednesday night, but the lit tle fellow had already passed.. Fun eral services were held at Asheville Thursday evening. Little Claude has been afflicted since birth and will be greatly missed in their home. He is survived by his parents and one lit tle sister, Clara. They have our sym pathy during their sad hour. j Mrs. W. A. Miss Nannie Melton accompanied by Mrs. Robert Freeman visited Mrs. Rose Lee Hunt and Miss Gussie Grayson on Sunday afternoon. BASEBALL. The Forest City-Alexander base ball club will play Spindale here Thursday at 3:30 o'clock, and will play at Spindale Saturday afternoon at 3:30.
