PAGE TWO BELIEVE IT OR NOT RIPLEY ON THE AIR Will Broadcast From Mid- Ocean, Wednesday, May 20—Standard Oil Program. ... * i New York, May 13.—(Special to The Courier.)— The first ship-to shore radio broadcast ever attempt ted from mid-ocean will take place j -next Wednesday evening, May 20th, at 7:45 Eastern Daylight Time, from the home-bound S. S. Leviathan, of the United States lines, when that ship is a thousand miles from Sandy Hook. A ship-to-shore' wireless tele phone will carry the voice of Robert L. ("Believe it or Not") Ripley to New York, where it will be broadcast over a' regular radio hook-up of nine stations covering the Atlantic sea board, from Maine to Georgia. This will inaugurate a new twice-a-week radio program sponsored by the Stan dard Oil Company of New Jersey. Known all over the civilized world for his "Believe it or Not" cartoons, Mr. Ripley (who signs his drawings simply as "Rip") is returning from a two months' trip in search of new "Queerioddities" and facts that are stranger than fiction. After search ing through remote corners of Al giers, Tunis, Morocco, Egypt, the Balkans and the Holy Land, as well as Europe, artist Ripley will sail from Southhampton, May 16th. He plans to reveal in his mid-ocean talk, it is reported, some of the latest incredi bilities unearthed on his trip which he has not yet been able to work into drawings. Since the program is scheduled to I begin May 20th, and the Leviathan j Is not scheduled to dock in New York until May 22nd, special methods had to be adopted to get Mr. Ripley's ROMINA □=■ I FOREST CITY " __ 7 NOW PLAYING "LOTTERY BRIDE" Reckless adventure! Expect to Use Seaplane* Nor is the ship-to-shore broadcast the final solution to the problem of putting "Believe it or Nots" on the air. The second program of the Stan dard Oil Company of New Jersey featuring Mr. Ripley is scheduled to go on the air at 7:45 p. m., East ern Daylight Time, the same night as the ship docks, May 22nd, and it is probably going to be necessary to \ get Mr. Ripley to the National j broadcasting Studios on Fifth Aven-j ue via seaplane from the Leviathan j off Nantucket Lightship to the Bat tery, Manhattan. Otherwise he would have no time to rehearse a very dif ficult program scheduled for that j evening. Believe it or not, after that," Mr. Ripley is expected to settle down more or less peacefully in New York, working on his drawings, his talkies, and his new book, and, (much to the relief of radio engineers), he will take himself and his voice to the microphone every Wednesday and Friday, instead of having to have his voice telephoned to a "mike a thousand miles away. The program is to be known as the "Believe it or Not" Esso Entertainment. MEMORIAL SERVICES AT SHILOH CHURCH SUNDAY Rutherfordton, R-l, May 1L Memorial day will be observed at Shiloh Baptist church next Sunday, j Sunday school will be held at 9:30, followed with decoration of graves at ten o'clock.
