Had the lire crossed the street opposite Davis ' & Bros, store, the. town would bave been doomed. ; ... The stores on the north side of front street weie all all-taved, by bard "work and by the use of a lot of tin garden rumps, which were banded out by Mr. O. Pierce We have often remarked that the colored Citizens of Beaufort were the best in the woi lx. they more tban proved it on liis occasion. We can 'not give an estimate as yet of the losses, Gutbrie & Co.. - are the heaviest losers. The htores and Warehouses occupied by following merchants were completely de stroying. Guthrie & Co.. Tyre Moore Jr. Taylor & Buckinan, C. A. Clawson, Dr. T. B. Dtlamar, Wm. Sahiston, 3..W. Ga bikr, Ohadvick & Jones, Thos. Thomas, F. Dill," Roberson & Bro., Joha E. Henry, and Ana Henry. What yea needed on this occasion was an or anized lire department JSTo tiire should be lose, a town the size of Beaufort should have means to fight fire, shall we have it or r.ot? Had there beeh some kind of aa organization to fight tire we would Jiot to day have to record the loss of so much valuable property. Let the Bnsiness men oi Bfauioi't organize a fire depart-, ment at once. : The Chiistmas1 tree eiitertainmeut which' was gotten up for the benefit of the children of Ann st.. 31. E. Church was a. fcuccess. We were J not present, but have been informed thatthose who contribu ted, felt more ihau repaid for their dona tions, by seeing the children so well pleased. Some old i ogy will always enter bis protect ag.iinsf'isuch entertainments, be forgets that he wis once a child, and delighted in such things. Let us have inore-of such entertainments they are not only entertaining but instructive. The fccbolars of St. Pauls P. Church, who Las filli said pulpit lor the past two vears, goes to another field as a laborer in the Masters - Vine yard. During the period ri which this pstimable chriiitian, gentlemen has labor ed among us, he won the hearts of our people. He leaves behind a host of friends, who wish him God's speed in hi3 new home, and restoration to perfect health. The Bishop has assianed to this station for the present year, Rev. F. A. Bishop. Our people welcome him with open hearts and hands. We trust that 2ds stay among us will be productive of much good. -The people have a part to peiform as well as the preacher. We hope that the new pastor will devote as much of his time as possible in the Sun-, day School. The old year with i joys, and sorrows is gone. If our time aud talents have beec wasted, it is to late to lepine the year is gone and we cannot recall it. In looking back in review, if we can poiut to a good, noble action or recall some Jeel of chanty, then tha year V7as not speut in vaiu. If we cannot do this, the year 187, wis a dismal failure and we should map out better plans for the new year.
