The editor of th!s paper is quite sick, with a severe attaefc. of rheuraatistn. Our readers ill please' overlook all mis takes, we have done the best we could. Beaufort must have a fire department. The rates charged by the insurance com panies are so high that the averajo mer chant cannot pay the premiums. .'.''..- The mails the mails the horrid mails. They never were so irregular, and so many letters never failed to leach their destination before. A second band engine and liook and ladder appliances can be purchased at this time almost for a song. What en terprising yourig merchant will start the ball in motion, to secure subscriptions to this end? , . Our business men should not delay in organizing a fire department, We ar at the mercy of conflagrations, which would be just as great as the one through which we have jnst" passed, - - - ' - ' If some of our menf iants do nt build brick stores, would it not be well to buiid fire walls of brick here and there- on the. burned district between the stores. Those fire walls would stop flr, and we would not have to record the distrnction of an entire block by fire again. A wonj to the wise wo trust! is sufficient. j We had a pleasant call from Mr. C. C; Buckman of Riltlmore Christmas week Mr. Buckmau paid a flying visit to, Ms boj hoods home and enjoyed the annual Christmas diuuer with his father and mother. It has been often and truly 'd: That a boy who 'is in love clth his mother will make a itooj husband. We call the atteutiou of the girls to the fact that he U reallj in love with his mother. It Is leap , year, girls, go for him. r r "
