There arj not inaDy island with a more stormy or more heroic history than that o Crete. In remote antiquity 1 was th redoubtable 4,iale of one hundred cities" and had au illuatri uua line of kings, among whom were Kbadamanthus, Minos ami idomen eus. The last nam d led a lleet SO ships to assist in the conquest o Irov and was the last of what we call the legendary kings After him a gap of Beveral centuries occurs. and when the record ia resumed it is no longer fuble, but authentic hid tory. At the time ot the ivreian invas ion of Uretce the island waa poirj loua and prosperous. It waa divid ed into several independent republics. which, like those of peninsular Hellas, were not t-lwaya in peace and friendship with each other. They kept fre from foreign wars, however, eicept as they voluntarily furnished mereconary troops to whichever side would pay beBt for them. Thia was done in both the Persian and 1'elloponnesian wars, when the Cretan archers were as not ed and aa dreaded aa those of merry England in later days. The prowesa of the ancient Cre tans and their insular position kept them free from invasion down al most to the Christian era. While the eagles of Rome '-Happed wide winga in fiery ll'ght" over nearly all else ot the knnwn world, tbat ialand retained ita independence. Indeed it was only through intes tine quarrels tint it waa at last sub dued. Hmie "0 yrara before the Christian era Home took advantage of the prevailing discord in Crete to invade the ls'and, on the pretext tbat the Cretans had given aid and comfort to Mithridatea and had ill treated some Kouian soldiers The first army waa repulsed and almost annihilated by the Cretans. Hut Home was determined to acheive the conquest if it took the whole power of her empire Army after army was sent, aud after three yeara of desperate fighting Kom prevailed. For the first time in her history Crete became, in 08 B.C., Bullet to an a it n master. From tbat dy to the prese.it, for mora . than 1900 years Bhe hH bn conqutreu province, ntvr once regaining the independence so long maintained and so relnctairly re linquished. REVOLT OF THEsi X. Women or, at any rate, the mem bers of the W men's International Progressive Unior. are kicking at the word "obey" in marraJge service. The phenomenal success of Coin's Financial School promises to be sur passed by "President John smith This remarkable book is now being discussed by the press all over the country, and has already seached an enormous sale. In many places "John Smith Clubs" are being form ed. The book is destined to play a most important part in the politica history of the coming fonr years and should be carefully read and stud ied. The author, Frederick U. Ad ams, may accept as a compliment the abuse which has been indulged in by the plutocratic press. He has written a splendid book, and any one will be the better for haying read it. "President John Smith" is on sale at the office of The Cstjca siav and will be forwarded by mat on receipt of twenty-five cents. Tba Talua of a Horn. Ojcar It. Oleason, the fa- Prof mous horse trainer and tamer, in a recent lecture before a large body of horsemen and farmers, made this re mark: "If a horse is worth $150, it is a recognized fact that $25 is about the actual value of the horse, and $125 is the value of his having been trained to man's use." Prof. Gleason has trained and broken more horses than uy man in the world. He has subdued tne most tamous vicious horses in this and other countries, and has been substantially reoog nized by the United States govern ment tor nis wondertul services in training horses for the cavalry and the artillery. His system is simplic lty itself, but extremely effective. and the beauty of the system is that it can be applied to any horse by any one. We have made special arrange ments with the publishers of Prof. Qleason's famous book, which has always sold at $1.50, and can supply a limited number to our subscribers. S)e offer in another column. "President John Smith" is the lit erary sensation oi tne year, rnis powerful political story is desanea to mark an epoch in the social and po litical history of tbe United States and to play an important part in shap ing tnougnc ana in mourning ruture political action. It should and will be read by every American citizen who is interested in the great secial and political problems now pressing for a solution. The au'bor, Frederick U. Adams, is one oi tne moss iamous newspaper writers in tne United atates. Mr. Adams wrote "President John Smith three years ago. He did not believe that period ripe for its publica tion, and has patiently waited for the development of events. The prophetic chapters or "President J onn smith is now read as a history. jvery im portant forecast has been more than realized. This book is a history of the events which led to the election of John Smith a plain American cit izen to the presidency of tbe United States. It is a story of peaceful revo lution;a tale of the triumph of the majority after a series of reverses, is a plea for majority rule. It ia scathing denunciation of the theory held by Dr. Lyman Abbott m.d other anarchists, that "governm-nr does not rest on the consent of the govern td is American in every paragraph and line. It breathes the pariot s n loftier than the constitution aud as broad as the liberty inspired lires of tbe im mortal Declaration if Indt-p dence. In mechanical form the book is some thing of a novelty. The price of 25 cents for a new novel in paper rovers become pretty well established, and recent competition among publishers has been in the direction of giving tbe bulkiest book possible for the money. This has resulted in the use of inferior paper of dingy color and too stiff to handle with comfort. The publishers of the present book believe intelligent readers will welcome a change, and "President John Smith" will be printed on creamy white pa per, just thick enough to be opaque, and of a size convenient for the side pocket.
