Connections at Fayetteville with train No. 78 at Maxton with .tlu Oysters and Disease. Iu a recent scientific work by Profs. Ihrdman and Boyce, entitled "Oys ters and Disease," they report the re sult of their Investigations on the cause which produces green oysters. Manj- epicures prefer their oysters to have the emerald hue, though there is a widespread opinion that green oysters are not edible. The investigators arrive at the con clusion that there are several forms of greeiinefcs. Copper is said to be present in minute quantity in all oys-te-s. It Was found that the greenest American oysters contained about four times the amount of copper which is pre-ent in the whitest American oys ters. Careful chemical examination demonstrated conclusively that there is proportionately mere copper in the greener parts of the oysters than in those parts which are less green. The green color of the highly prized Mar ennes oysters was found to be pro duced by the presence of a certain pigment and did not depend upon the amount of the contained copper. Some five years ago a group of col lege men, In which were many mem bers of the Yale and Princeton base ball teams, was discussing the game of the next day, which was to decide tha championship. "Slugger" Kelly, the hardest hitter on the Jersey nine, predicted in the course of the con versation, that he would get a home run in the coming game. The Yale pitcher turned toward him and asked how certain he was of that home run. Kelly replied that he was sure to the extent of T5,000 and the Yale pitcher remarked that he was convinced of the opposite to a like degree the two players shook hands on the wager and went home to bed. During the first eight innings Kelly came to the bat five times and five times ho got his base on balls, the Yale man taking care to send in no ball that Kelly could touch. When the "slugger" came to the bat in the last half of the ninth there were two men out and an eager tiger was hovering off first base. Kelly knew that it was his last chance to hit the ball and as the first ball pitch-' ed came flying down far to one side of the plate the "slugger" Btepped away across the rubber and his bat met the ball with a 6harp crack. The next second the broken bat was lying on the ground and Kelly was flying around the diamond. He reached horns with the winning run about a second before the ball landed in the catcher's nand , and as he brushed the dust from his shirt he calmly remarked: "I knew I could do it." Without entering into the question cf the morality of betting, that sort of spirit is what is needed to-day by the man who wants to accomplish some thing. Not the conceit of the man who deludes himself with a magnified picturo of his own abilities, but the calm certainty of the one who knows what he can do and intends to do it. The world trusts the man who Irusts himself. Wanted a Door. A stubborn horse is an annoying creature under any circumstances, but the story of an incident which happened during a regimental drill raises the question whether such a horse may not simply be overcon scious. The sun blazed down on a field of hot, tired horses and excited men, all waiting for a big, raw-boned animal to succumb to the urgings of tho starter and get into line. "Bring up that horse!" shouted one of the officers at last, his patience having given out. "You'll get into trouble if you don't." The youthful rider of the refractory horse looked at his officer despair ingly. "I'm as tired of It as you are, sir' he said, with dull resignation, "but I can't help it. He's a cab horse, sir; that's what he is. He won't start till he hears the doot shut, sir, and I haven't got any door to shut." Tid- Bits. The Mexican dog has no hair. Tangled with seaweed, dark and green; A desolate and dreary scene, Aa far as tha eye could reach; Tha tide was out. How changed the view when day Is done; The boats rode gayly in the deep. Their white sails noddipg as in sleep. Kissed by the setting- sun; Tha tide was in. Thus many a life, in want and woe Lies stranded on the barren shore; But God God forever more; Take courago, for we know The tide is coming in.
