Many Conventions IJelni; Held in the State This Week. Many conventions are being held in the State this week and the ma jority of the counties will send dele gates to the State Convention to be held in Charlotte on next Wednesday, September 4th. The Wake County Convention was held Saturday and elected twenty-six delegates to at tend the Charlotte convention. Both Taft and Roosevelt men participated and all favor one State ticket. No resolutions were passed on the Pres idential question. The Johnston County Republicans will hold their convention tomorrow and will elect delegates to the Charlotte Conven tion. Two conventions will be held in Forsythe County. The Roosevelt supporters will hold a convention and the papers announce that Post master Uejnolds and District Attor ney Holt on will bolt that convention and hold a Taft convention. A con vention of all the Republicans of (iuilford will be held in Greensboro today. It is understood that all the Republicans in Rowan will attend the same county convention on ne:ci Sat urday. The Roosevelt forte.-, in Rockingham County held a conven tion on Monday and named a full legislative and county ticket. Hon. H. X. Simpson was named for the Senate. The prospects are for a large gath ering at Charlotte on the 4th. A strictly Progressive Convention is called for Greensboro on Septem ber 3rd. WAKE WATER CO. INDICTED. City of Raleigh Enters Suit Against Company for Serving Unfiltered Muddy Water to City. A warrant on the part of the city of Raleigh was served on the Wake Water Company Tuesday afternoon, citing the company to answer charges of unlawfully and wilfully serving unfiltered water to the people of Ral eigh for domestic and drinking pur poses. Mayor Johnson and all the alder men, except one, went to the plant Monday and found that the condition was unsatisfactory and they decided not to wait any longer for the water company to make promised improve ments, but to enter suit at once and see what can be legally done in the premises. No filth has been found in the water but the company is sim ply furnishing muddy branch water, that does not look fit to drink. In fact, the water is not fit to bathe in, much less to drink. Whether the charter will be taken away from the company or whether they will make the necessary improvements in the Plant is not know,n. But the people of Raleigh are hoping for relief in one form or another. Attacks Preacher With Knife, Mr. D. Bryant Harrison, a well-to-do and prominent farmer, of Wake County, attacked Rev. C. R. Sorrell with a pocket knife a few days ago, inflicting several serious 'wounds on his face and one arm. Mr. Harrison, t is said, had requested the young minister not to encourage his daugh ter in marrying: a vouner man whom he considered worthless but reports ! are that the minister helped the young lady elope. Mr. Harrison waiv ed a preliminary hearing and gave bond in the sum of $200 for his ap pearance at court. & Watch the date on your labeL WAKE CONVENTION Twenty - Six Delegats and Alternates Elected to Ghar lotte Convention One l Ion f a Coonty Tick Wu It. ferrcd Until Aftr Natf Convent im J. C. L- lUrri and Other llr bukMl for Voting Ignorant .Xrgrtx In Primary Who Cfennot Vot Thl Fall A HarmonlouM Convention. The Republican of Wake County held their convention in the auditor ium in Raleigh Saturday and elected twenty-six delegates and twenty-six alternates to attend the Republican State Convention to be held in Char lotte, September 4. The question of a county ticket was deferred to a later meeting, to be held after the State Convention. A resolution was passed rebuking Col. J. C. L. Harris. S. V. Hudson and others, for voting ignorant negroes in the June pri mary, when they will not be allowed to vote in the general election this fall. A Harmonious Convention. A caucus was held in the Chamber of Commerce rooms at 11 o'clock, at which party matters were discussed and a line of action agreed upon. The convention was called to order in the auditorium at 12:30 by Chair man Lester Butler and he called upon Messrs. F. N. Gattis and J. J. Basden to act as secretaries. The roll of the precincts were called and the large majority of them were found to be represented. After the roll of town ships was called the temporary or ganization was made permanent and the convention then proceeded to elect twenty-six delegates and twen ty alternates to attend the State Convention at Charlotte next Wed nesday. It was then decided to post pone the question of a county ticket until after the State Convention. The following resolution offered by Mr. E. T. Banks was unanimously adopted: "Be it resolved, that we the 'legal ly' accredited delegates to the Wake oCunty Republican Convention, elect ed in the June primary, denounce the methods employed by Col. J. C. L. Harris, S. V. Hudson and some of their followers in the June 'legalized' primary in urging ignorant negroes to participate in said primary when they will have no right to vote in the general election. "We do not endorse the methods used by these men in securing votes in the primary, and take this means of showing to the public that we will not condone the action of such men in our party." Mr. Banks then gained the floor and stated that he knew well that Lester Butler had been elected chair man by the legally accredited dele gates at the former convention and moved that this convention reaffirm his election and renew theirlleg iance to him as chairman. This mo tion was carried unanimously. A motion to adjourn to meet again at the call of the chairman and com mittee was carried. Messrs. Harris, Andrews and !3rit,is did not attend the conven tion Saturday, as they knew they were outnumbered and they could not have brought up any contests or had any cause whatever for bolting as the delegates to "the convention had been elected in the June "legal ized" primary and the name of all the legally elected delegates were on file. There were seventy-four votes represented in Saturday's convention out of a possible 123 and the Harris element could have had only forty nine votes to cast, even if they had attended Saturday's convention and could have had all their .precincts represented, so on this occasion they decided to bolt ahead of time. The following is a list of delegates and alternates chosen to attend the State Convention: Delegates: F. N. Gattis, J. W. Harden, Geo. M. Glenn, B. B. Carter, John Scarborough, L. F. Butler, A. V. Dockery, H. T. Jones, A. J. Wat kins, Jas. S. Mangum, C. M. Bernard, R. 1.. Sorrell, J. H. Arnold, O. G. Al len, A. D. Baker, W. B. Howard, A. D. Upchurch, P. A. Sorrell, Chas. E. There will be special rates on the railroads to the Republican Conven tion to be held in Charlotte Septem ber 4 th. The local offices have not yet been advised the exact rate, but It is understood the round trip rate from Raleigh will be in; the neigh borhood of $5.45, which is little more than -half fare. Tfc annual ranting of lh State Farmers' ConTeation w&a fe!4 Is lUMgh this k Tha iion clos ed Tuesday evening and quit a tare crowd of farmers and farmer daugh ter and wires have bn In attend ance. In fact, the attendance ibi year was a record breaker. The la dies were Riven demonstration In cooking and canning and domestic science. Talks and Illustrations ere made to the men on Improve meth ods of farming, dairying, etc. The question of the b-st soils for t&e various crops was also di-eid. President W. J. Shuford delivered hie annual address on Tuesday nlefat. which treated especially on the ques tion of rural credit as necessary for permanent Improvement or farming, methods, whereby the yields per arre may be substantially Increased and urged that the famous "Land Schaften Associations" of Germany and the "Credit Fancier" In Franc he revamped and adapted into a sys tem suitable for North Carolina and for the United States at large. He insisted that the success that has been scored by these Institutions In Germany and France make it un necessary for new and untried schemes of finance to be tried in this country to assure to farmers much needed funds at low rates of interest and for long periods. He presented in detail the German and the French methods that assure short loans for from one to nine years and long time loans from ten to seventy-five years with annual amortization. Mr. Shuford declared the average North Carolina farmer of 1912 more prosperous, more progressive and ag gressive than for years, but insisted that farming is not yet anything like as profitable as it should be and will surely become through new methods and better farming. Other speeches were made by Dr. Hill, Gajor Graham, Prof. Massey and others. Mr. Charles J. Parker, Jr., of Ht-rt-ford, the champion corn grower, was on hand and told how he made 235 bushels of corn last year upon one acre of ground at a cost of twenty four cents a bushel. On yesterday the live stock at the college was in spected and there were talks on dairying, Berkshire breeding in North Carolina, hog cholera, and on the merits of the Guernsey cow. The meeting was pronounced a suc cessful one and all seemed glad that they had attended. IMPORTANT CHANGE OF SCHED ULE. A. & A. and I). & C. Divisions H. C. & S.
