CHARLOTTE BANKS , AND DISTANT TRADE ' S r t local Institatlons Commanding Splendid Easiness From Oat OMown Castoiner , Charlotte has come to be a great financial center," said a president of one of the leading: National banks of the city, commenting: In general' upon the many-elded development of tbe dty within recent years.; 'Very- few outside of the banking business , have any Idea as to the extent of business from out-of-town that the ''Charlotte institutions secure," he ' continued. "Within a radius of, 90 inilea,. thecity is driving daily business.; 'Great .de rtlopments in towns and citaesjwlthin (U$ distance are financed here.- : Big loam are made and accounts are kept la Charlotte banks. ; ;;: , .. V . This is not militating against the ipbers of usefulness of - the , local banks. They, are good In their, places and almost Indispensable to the com inanities in -which they are located, bat they are not able to handle and do sot expect . to handle .the heavy financial propositions that confront tbe Industrial interests of their towns and communities. This business comes to Charlotte, where. It can be safely nd expeditiously attended to and the remit is that the local banks here have established a commanding busi ness among the industrial Interests of the communities within a large ra dios ef the city. Surprise Expressed That City Is Not up to Pate in Her Street-TJghtang -Wilmington and Other Cities Ahead. - . (Wilmington , Dispatch.) - Charlotte , is again trying to have a Great White Way. It should succeed in this desire, because of the fact that the business section of the ""City of Electrical Energy has been lacking In this direction has . been - an ' in congruity. In fact, it 'has been sur prising that a city, as' live as Char lotte (there is none better) has not a big lighting system f or , its main thoroughfares, but it looks lige, this defect is going to be speedily reme died, no wthat there has s become a srystalizaftlon of . effort. - Charlotte wants to spend about $4,000 more per year on its electric system, so as to furnish ligts in dustrers for 14 blocks in the down-ttreet section. These cluster-lights are to be placed at short intervals on irin polesv which will take the places of the unsightly wooden poles, i The city; fathers have not - as yet agreed to - the change, but it seems certain of materialization; as it apparently meets with the hearty sup port of a big majority of the people of .the Queen City.- Some cities have in the past obtained -the money for extra street lights from business men, but hot only was - this found annoy ing and : uncertain, but was really a drawback. . The only right way is for the city to pay for such lights and in turn all - the - people are many times repaid in convenience' and comfort, to say nothing of the big advertising given.. A well-lighted city is a mark of llveness, and not onlyVaffords safe ty from accident, but is a prevent ive of depredations. - And for a city to have its business section brightly illuminated is Indeed a sign of great progress. ; Wilmington! now for sev eral years " has had a Great White Way that Is the equal of any, and we. do not believe the people could be induced to part with it. Front street, Mraket, Princess and soma adjoin ing streets, the latter for a block or bo, are almost as bright at night as in the day. The arrangement . of the lighting system, , strings of Tungsten globes overhead, is admirable, too. Charlotte and every other Tar Heel city of size - should . poin the - proces sion. 4 It not only helps the material welfare of folks at home, but it causes a stir among visitors. The lat ter never fail to comment upon Wil mington's Great White Way, and, it is bright dollars to bum pennies, v that they hold it up as an example to oth er places. - ' The 1 boy's appetite Is often the source of amasement. . l you would have such an appetite take Chamberlain's Tablets. Finally it Is said that Professor Coon." who was on the platform: and in charge of the room, reached for - the boy and. grasping the collar of his coat, shook him violently, threw him on the floor and spanked him. The pupils also claim that the boy , was choked and purple in the face. On the other hand, v Professor. Coon positively de nies" either spanking or choking the boy, but says that he did shake him. He further states that he had x perienced considerable trouble In keeping the : pupils ' quiet., and ; had announced that he would shake the first boy who violated the rules, llr. Coon also says that , he has made an earnest effort - to secure the co operation of the scholars and their parents In the proper discipline of the schooL ' The incident has resulted In con siderable 'comment and the resultant investigation ' is awaited with more than" ordinary interest. ... It' is- cur rently reported by pupils , that Mr. Coon was excited and angry and that he ; walked the floor of the , school room for an hour after the incident, talking to the pupils.' Mr. Coon says that he was not excited and that the incident was insignificant.
