First Notable Iloslcal Event Of flie Winter Will Be Given "Accompanied hj his own party, Tsaye, th6 eminent Belgian vio linist; arrived' 1 in ; the city " this morning ' on his special car at tached to train No. 87. The party alighted at'once'and went' to reserva tions at the Selwyn, where they will remain during their stay in Char lotte. Madam . Rosa Olitxka, the re nowned conlralto. who will appear with Ysayp tonight' in the first of a eeries of three attractions to be given under the . auspices of ; the Charlotte Musical Association, arrived here last night. 7 .' r ' : " ' The night's events promises ?to- be onejpf th Jrno8t extraordinary - affairs bf tiki&e-giYin ln'Clarlotte or irr this part t) the South; Seldom have two" artists 'of such name and fame as Tsaye and Olitska appeared outside of the larger cities of this and other countries and the coming of euch distingtiiahed geniuses ; for the engagement tonight Is an .evidence of what the' local musical' association has achieved In" its program for the Win ter selections. ; : ; ; j '" - ;. " Like most endowed with ry great genius, Tsaye is as simple and as un affected as . possible. His" -maimer on the stage is most : attractive, full of quiet dignity, and yet good fellowship as If he would say, "I am ; here ; to give you pleasure, but ' it is pleasure to ine too, for it la all so easy." And then he Just, stands up ' and plays off his pieces with the most intimate per fection and as if it were child's play. Recently in a Joint recital ': 'with Pugno, the program consisted of so natas by. Bach, Mosart and Beethoven Our New Year's Stock. . . . $225. .... $215. . . .. $200. . ("Kreutaer") where Was none of that sense of . "show off which so spoils these pieces when played by lesser men to whom the task is difficult. But perhaps the greatest conquest of all was Ysaye's interpretation of the Bach Sonata. ,On hears much Bach' played In Paris and : there are . two distipct modes of interpretation, both equally bad. - TheN one -consists of striving to make the musio sound antique by sim ply depriving it of every vestige of feeling, the other consists of trying to give It an interest in modern eafs by lending it a spirit of stupid senti mentalism. ' Tsaye does , neither, of these things, his Bach is the work of a healthy full-blooded German com poser, full of life and spirit, .full of sentiment, but not of senthnentalism, not modern, yet in no way painfully ancient. You say to yourself that Bach must have been much the same sort of a' man that Ysaye is, and no doubt he was, for genius , is pretty much alike in" all ages and the world over. Yet if Ysaye is a lover of Bach he is not intolerant and he plays Grahms and Pranck wit,h the , sariie fervor and with the same complete comprehension of the-designs of the composer. ; j When ' Sugene Tsaye plays, hfs .wpn. derful violin. One finds it : difScuIt whether most to admire the luscious, limpid ' and large tone,, or the 'phe nomenal skill of his art, .To call him the "Caruso of the Violin,", gives him only half cjedit for what he does;"but it is because .of the wondrous rich ness of his . tone quality; that the ap pellation has been added to a cate gory" with others. It's a change any way from hailing him as "a giant of the bow" or "the greatest violinist of the' age." ' ' J " ; ' ' When" Caruso - sings it is the rich beauty of his voice - and the warmth of his singing that stirs the populace; for the same reasons does Tsaye $tir the great audiences that flock to hear him. : Musically,-o course, nb com parisons could be drawn between the Metropolitan tenor and the Belgian1 virtuoso, but It is simply on the sen suous sidepf Judging where 'there Is a similarity; Musically, Tsaye ranks with the great composers of . all time and with the thinkers who have helped to unravel the intricacies of music as a science. ; Tsaye ' returns to America for an other tour this season; it is just- eight years since he has been. "here and during that time a new army of mu sic lovers and music students have appeared that -will profit greatly' by what Tsaye' presents to his public But the od Tsaye enthusiasts will not regtect to fill the halls when he plays. Although a BelKlani lfye plays the German classics better than any Ger man of his generation ; then he has mastered the French school and when it comes to the ; mere fireworks of Paganini ho becomes a veritable ma gician. . .. . POSTOPFIOE MEN ENJOYED SUPPER ; The employe&at the Charlotte post-. office enjoyed a social event last even ing in the postofflce building in . the nature of an. oyster supper, given by the clerks to the carriers and other employes . about the. building.
