BY ORDER OF THE CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTE. 15-4t-wed-frl-mo-tu Negro Killed , Near Duke. Duke, Sept. 15. Late Saturday af ternoon Tom McCormick, a negro man, was shot and killed at the camp of the Southern Drainage and Construction Company. Eye witnesses say that David Jones, another negro did the shooting. A powerful gun was used and the ball entered one arm and passed through the body. David Jones escaped through the swamps and nothing has been seen of him since. McCormick died in a few minutes after he was shot. Both parties had gone to the camp to watch the ditching machinery and McCormick was in a buggy with two or three children, other negroes were standing around the buggy and a woman asked Tom to bring her some candy from Duke. He replied that he was afraid of David Jones. From that a few words passed be-! tween Jones and McCormick, result ing in Jones telling some one to take the children out of the buggy and ordering McCormick to take his head back in the buggy. McCormick refused until the gun was drawn. Jones stepped back a few paces and fired the fatal shot. Both men laughed for a minute until it was realized what happened. When an attempt was made to catch Jones he turned his gun on the ' crowd and made his way to the swamps. Innocent Bystander Gets His. Greensboro, Sept. 15. Because an acquaintance borrowed his overall and jumper in which to do. a day's work, Sam King, negro, started a quarrel Monday evening at a boarding house for negroes on Chestnut street that re sulted in the wounding of Will Hair ston and Jack Montgomery. Hairston was the negro who bororwed the jump er without telling the owner of half an outfit of overalls and when the three gathered at the house for supper, King started to tell Hairston exactly what he thought of a person who would borrow in such a manner as he did. 1 The argument did not last long and was finallly settled when King drew his revolver and fired, one shot graz ing the thigh of Hairston and shatter ing the bone in Montgomery's right arm while the other went straight to. its mark, striking Harrison near the right shoulder blade and penetrating the lung. Then King started to leave, but not before he handed the weapon to Montgomery and stated that he did not intend to shoot him, but that he in tended to "get" Hairston. With the request that - Montgomery would not shoot him, King beat it for the tall and uncut. MBncvmc riremen xo rurcnase nurse . and Wagon. . ! Asheville, Sept. 15. Still believing that Asheville should be ably repre sented at each of the state firemen's tournaments and further believing that the city cannot be ably repre sented unless a team with a horse i and wagon .go from this city, the members of the Asheville fire depart ment have voted to raise funds with which to purchase a horse and hose wagon. - While the next state tournament will : not be held until next summer and the,, hose, and wagon will not be purchased until, next spring, the fire men propose to start at once raising Phone 115 money, which will be raised by popu lar subscription and hope by spring to have , raised enough to make the purchases. Asheville for years maintained - the best racing team in the state, but the advent of the gasoline propelled wag ons in the department spelled the death of the horse and the hose wag on and since that time the local lad dies have been content to watch oth er.firemen win races. That is they did that until this year when, at New Bern, a team from this city borrowed a horse and wagon and came out fourth in a race with the best teams of the state. GOVERNMENT HAS AMPLE SUPPLY OF DYESTUFFS. By Associated Press. Washington, Sept. 15. By employ ing rigid economy the Bureau of En graving and Printing has met " the scarcity of dyestuffs resulting from war in Europe, and now has available enough pigments to color the govern ment's money ' and stamps for six months. ;t By the end of that period Direc tor Ralph believes a supply of coiofS made in America will be available, or; that arrangements will be made for securing ample shipments from Germany. When the war broke out the bureau succeeded in buying a year's supply of the necessary blues and reds ; for postage stamps. The amount of color used in inks was reduced to a min imum, even at the 'risk in some cases of making the printed product a tri fle paler than normal. During the past year the bureau has obtained several small lots ot colors and a good sized shipment from Germany was secured througn diplomatic negotiations. The process, however, has been expensive. Director Ralph said today that for small lots of red dyes he had been forced to pay 75, 80 and 90 cents a pound com pared with 26 cents before the war. The bureau has been able to quit the foreign market in producing . one color and turned to American manu facturers. A vegetable dye used m coloring black ink, formerly import ed from Germany, is now being pur chased in large quantities trom a Pennsylvania dyestuff plant.
