Chicago, Jan. 6.—A muffler on the gasoline engine of an automobile cause the death last night of Dr. John Aloysius Hemsteger, a prominent phy sician. He died from the effects of ^ XU* , carbon dioxine he inhaled on Wednes- What will prove to be of unusual cleaning t!*e apparatus on his machine. I>v Associated Press. Xasliville, Tenn., .Jan. 7.—Powers GeJiiry, sentenced to be hanged at lie statop rison here on January 11 lias been granted a reprieve by Gov ernor Patterson until March 13. Gen try is in .jail liere suffering from h(*art disease. He was convicted of the murder of Milto nBerry in Mon- y'roe county on March 1, 1910. Hemsteger, finding a quantity of car bon had accumulated in the muffler and engine cylinders poured a mix ture of wood alcohol and kerosene into them to clean them out. He then started the engine and opened the cut off valve in the muffler. The garage door was closed and there was no oth er outlet for the forming carbon gas that rushed into the room. The phy sician was almost overcome but man aged to open the door of the garage which let in the fresh air. He was taken to his residence where he died the next day. Physicians who held an autopsy as sert that death was due directly to poisoning of the heart of the carbon gas. Dr. Hemsteger was 56 yea.s old.
