Rooms 3 and 4 Oavtdson ouiiding, East Trade St., Charlotte, N. C. Hours: 9 a. m. to 8 p. m. Sundays 9 to 1. An attempt by prisoners to escape from the Mecklenburg county jail was frustrated yesterday afternoon when Chief of Police Chrlstenbury received information of the proposed delivery, and acting upon the Information sur prised the ones who are alleged to liave conceived the plan to escape, A hacksaw and five new blades, a bottle of nitric add and other things gener ally used by pnsoners in sawing their way to freedom, were found In a cell of the prison. Two bars of one cell in the inner cage had been well-nigh saw ed in two, and the men w'ould have likely escaped last night had the infor mation to Chief Chri&tenbury been delayed, T. H. Sibley and J. C. Masters, fed- ernl prisoners, are alleged to be the ones who contemplated the escape and who saw'ed the bars in their'attempt. ••Cricket" Wood, a white prisoner, cianinuniratod the information to the police department, the bars having been sawed in the cell used by him but to which all prisoners had access. Acocrding to Wood, he and another young man were to get |25 each for iraintaining silence and a prisoner named L. M. ilunter was to receive i $L‘oO for the assistance he would ren-1 der. Sibley and Masters are accused cf using the United States mails for; fra'idulent ])urpos-es and have been un-: fible to furnish bail. They were arrest-, c(l la Jackson. Miss., and will be tried at the next term of federal court for the western district of North Caro- liiia. tUUh etnphatically deny they arej guilty of having tried to Escape. Seen! at The jail this movring by a reporter | fc)r The News the men said they knew; u(^thing of the presence in the jail ofi the saws or the nitric acid and that; ni bars v, ere flawed in their cell; “We : were hanricnfi’cd together and taken | outp’de while the jail was searched,”! sfid Masters, • ar.d I do not know any thin?; about any attempt at jail deliv ery, [ v.-ish they would return me the money that they took from me. that is all. Sibley corroborated Masters, ard Hunter, who was near, said that he had not been offered any money to aj;Ms't in ;ho e.=;rr.pe and that he knew nothing of the attempt. The prisoner. Wood, had been un der the care of a jihysician for some time and he told that doctor to tell the police of the plans of the prison ers to make their escape. When Chief Christenbury heard the news he went in company with Patrolmen C.aidner and Pits and made the start ling discovery. .Tai’or Porter Avas not in the city at the time, being out in the county on official business. He was surprised when he returned and found that an attempt had been made to e?=oa;)e from the jail, and was great ly pleased that it had been flustrated just in time. It is supnosed that the saws were brought into the jail by a young wo man who posed as the cousin of Mas ters and who visited him dally last week. She passed one package to him, saying that it contained clothes. She never gave her name to the at tendants at tne jail. A trusty was kept in the corridor and he finished his term this week. It is thought that the prisoners w’ho contemplated the escape suspected this man^nd did not work until he went away. OflRcers Johnson and Earnhardt accompanied Chief Christenbury to the jail later in the evening and made a more thor ough inspection. The crime of which Masters and Sibley are alleged to be guilty is one that has interested ' many people through the state. They were promo tors of the Albemarle Developpaent Co., a something that has never been chartered but stock in which has been sold all through the United States. Several people in Charlotte own hand some residential sites in the beautiful place! Sibley lives in Albemarle but Masters has a home anywhere he hangs his hat. He used somee cuts in a littl the cuts were recognized as the same ones he used once before in a scheme that reparated a lot of Texans from their moner. A close watch will be kept on the men hereafter and their visitors will have to be searched before being ad mitted to the inner circle of the jail. Vote Today in News Bond Election.
