STROUPE THE RUBBER TIRE MAN 211 W. 4th St. Sports WAS IT CHARLES OLSEN WHO WRESTLED McCRAY? By Associated Press. Amarillo, Texas, Feb. 1.—It is stat ed here on good authority that Harry Mayes, the opponent of Joseph Mc Cray In Saturday night’s wrestling bout in which McCray received in- ju.iios from which he died Monday, is Charle§ Olson, a well known wrest ler of Indianapolis. McCray, who figured in the match as “Stanley Lake,” hailed frotn Long mont. Col., and claimed the Colorado heavyweight wrestling title. His iden tity was admitted yesterday by his father, who accompanied his son on the tour. AMUSEMENTS' Olga Nethersole Tonight. Playgoers of Charlotte will enjoy a rare treat at the Academy of Mu sic tonight, when Miss Olga Nether sole, the distinguished English ac tress makes her appearance here in her new play “The Redemp tion of Evelyn Vaudry," which has been accorded much favorable com ment by the press and public throughout the North. Miss Nethersole was seen here last season in “Sappho” and the Immense crowd that greeted this celebrated actress on that occasion will doubt less turn out again tonight, and wel come this famous player. Miss Nethersole is this season ap pearing under the management of Leibler & Company, the same pro ducing firm that sent Viola Allen, in “The White Sister,” last week. There has been a heavy demand for seats at Hawley’s. Vote Today in News Bond Election. Baseballologism ! Davidson College will not take a trip into Virginia this year, but instead will i)lay baseball through Eastern Xorih Carolina and in Soutii Carolina. The scliedule has been completed and two games are slated for Charlotte, one with A. & M, and the other with the University of Xorih Carolina. Two games wil be played with South Car- liua, one at Greenwood and one at Co lumbia. On Easter Saturday the col lege nine will play the Winston-Salem league team at Winston. Winston-Salem baseball enthusiasts have purchased a park site in the city limits and are ready for the opening of the season of 10] L A manager for the team will be selected by the stock 2 owners within a short time and a nine will be put to practice. Winston is I going aftc?r the matter in a business like way this year and the Twins should give a good account of them selves. Carl Morris, the “white man’s hope,” is rather wroth because Jack Johnson, the negro champion, referred to him as having faked some fights. Lew Dockstader Coming. Money has been spent with a lav ish hand, it is said, in staging “Lew Dockstader's Twentieth Century Min strels,” which comes to the Academy of Music Wednesday of next week. This season Mr. Dockstader has a minstrel show built on new lines. He calls it ‘•minstrelsy with a plot” and declares that it really merits the distinction of being called a mu sical comedy in blacit-face, for it has a real story that is carried through from first curtain to the last and interfered with just as often as it becomes necessary to introduce a clever song, a snappy monologue or a new joke. Associated with Mr. Dockstader this year are the fol lowing artists; CaiToll Johnson, Ed die Mazier, “Happy” Naiilty, Charles Falk, Harry A. Ellis. Tom McKenna, Allan Campbell, Charles Raymond and eighty others. Two Good Reasons. There are two tilings about “The Redemption of Evelyn Vaudray” that are in ihemselves enough to insure a great house to see this dramatic en tertainment at the Academy of Music tonight. One is the fact that Miss Olga Nethersole is taking the princi pal part in the production and the other is the fact that it is being staged by Lieber & Co. Miss Nethersole has been seen in this city before and the people know she represents the highest type of the emotional actress and that fact makes her appearance here one of the dra matic events of the season. I.ieber & Co. have made an enviable reputation for themselves in this coun try by not sending anything on this circuit but the best that can be se cured. and the simple fact that they are the producers insures a large at tendance at the performance. From the time the tickts were put on sale there has been a steady de mand for them until now it is assured that a packed house will be entertain ed by this star. The company will arrive In this city this afternoon at 4:30 o’clock, which precludes the possibility of a matinee. Vote Today in News Bond Election. January Short on Rain/all Huntersville Coming To The Front The progressive town of Hunters- vilie is the only town in the state of its size that has a $3,000 house us-od ex clusively as a barber shop. Other facts are also at hand to show that Huntersville Is expanding and taking on new life. An unusual amount of building is in progress there jus-t now and every industry is thriving. On College avenue, which is becoming rapidly the residence avenue of the town, there are in process of erection a number of new residencs that would do credit to a far larger place. Real estate values are also on the increase and have taken a step for ward since the possibility of securing the interurban line through this sec tion has become an assurance. Huntersvillians are patriotic to a degree and any movement that has for its purpose the common welfare of the town receives the united support of all the citizens. One of the monu ments to this s-pirit is the state school at Huntersville, which is in a very flourishing condition. A competent force of teachers is employed and the enrollment is greater than at any school in the county, outside the city of Charlotte. Postmastei Gave HimseU Up By Associated Press. Sydney, C. B,. Feb. 1.—After hav ing eluded the ))olice and postoffice authorities for several weeks, Wil liam O’Neill, the postmaster at Wa terford, gave himself up yesterday to answer to the charge of stealing from the mails a package containing $7,500 in cash. The money belonged to the Waterford branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia. The Waterford agent of the bank addressed the package to the Sydney branch of the bank and registered it at the Wateford postoffice. The package did not arrive at Sydney and when an investigation was be gun it was found that O’Neill was missing. A few days later O’Neill gave the package to a clergyman in Truro requesting that it be de livered to the Truro branch of the bank. O’Neill then disappeared again but returned to Cape Breton yester day and surrendered to the authori ties. > The normal precipitation for the month of January in the vicinity of tharlotte is 4.29 inches, while accord ing to the official report of Observer W.
