Directors. (Asheville Gazette News.) In the current issue of the South ern Farm Journal, the state horticul turalist, W. N. Hutt, sketches the pos sibilities of this section for commer cial orcharding in a manner which should accelerate the fruit growing in dustry in western North Carolina and throughout the southern Appalachians. The writer notes the rapid utilization of cut-over lands for orcharding and the renovation of old orchards under thA rftalization of the profits to be found In the fruit industry in a region so favored in this regard by natural conditions. Of climatic conditions and marketing advantages he says: The Blue Ridge and Great Smoky mountains seem to be a natural pro tecting barrier from the cold waves that sweep across the central west, while the region is too far north to bo affected hv the fierce tropical gales that blow from the south. The pro tected coves and long eievatea slopes afford adequate air drainage, so that the danger from frosts is greatly min imized. A total failure of fruit in these thermal -zones of our southern moun tain rearinn is nracticallv unknown. This southern mountain region, by virture of its position can get its pro duct into market before northern and wfiKtprn annles are mature. It has, thfirftforft. nracticallv no comnetition on early varieties of apples. The great influx of population to the south to take up fruit lands is letting our own people see that there is a rich value in their rugged hills and laountain slopes of which they little dreamed. At the rapid rate at which it is now developing the southern Appalachian region will in the very near future be one of the leading commercial fruity regions of the country. j The development of fruit growing! on a commercial scale in this region was, Mr. Hutt says, retarded by the development of the west, but since at tention was turned to it progress has been very rapid. The establishment of effective marketing practices has been a matter of time, but is now an accomplished fact. "While the pro portions of commercial orcharding are now considerable, the industry in the southern Appalachians is still in its infancy. HARMONY. Th man whr nrnfits hv hie own misakes is naturally tempted to keep on making more. (Hickory Democrat.) Harmony is defined as unison: iutrt adaptation of parts to one another, sa as to form a connected whole; accord in feeling, sentiment, etc. in view 01 the coming election we feel that this little word, "harmony," should be ap plied to our words and actions in all its meaning. We must pull together for our common good. The thing to uo is to nut. un sood men for the places and elect them, without resorting to bitter attacks, hard feelings ana un friendliness. Hickory is a good town and harmony will do more toward building it up than any other power that can be imagined.
