j 1--- - THE CHARLOTT NEWS, MARCH 9, 1914. 15 K '1 1 1 v Tl! , 77 floiorove Your (- JB. 1 - - - . ' . j rigwrev ' THY NEDS. We falter daily by the way, And, grown discouraged, sigh and sa, "What use to struggle 'neath life's load 1 Up such a steep and stony road? So weak are we. Our strength is spent.'? , And so; to earth by burdens bent, We sink, forgetting that we read, "God giveth strength in time of need." O weary pilgrim, lift your eyes, From things of earth to heaven's fair skies, Remembering how One bore for thee J-he burden of a Calvary. A ' Remembering that, no longer shrin. Beneath your load. Take heart and think "God meant the promise just for me, "As thy neeas are, thy strength shall ' be." - Not by one effort and today We gain the heights so far away. But step by step toward heaven we climb By striving upward all the time. And each day proves to us anew That God's dear promises come true, For day by day he gives indeed Fresh strength for all our times of need. Eben E. Rexford, in the Christian Herald. A savings bank in Evanston has advertised that it will place $1 to the credit of every baby born in that city, and it advfees the parents ' of the children to deposit on each birth day of the child as many dollars as the youngster is years old, then to let the money remain in the bank drawing interest, until the child reaches 21. It is a clever advertisement and excellent advice. If parents did that, the total sum deposited to the credit of the child upon its twenty-fist birth day, including $21 for. that birthday, would be $231, or an average of ?ll a year. But the bank account on that twenty-first birthday would show a mnch larger sum, $284.59, in fact, computed at the savings bank rate pi interest, 3 per cent. That is, the eum of $53.59 will have been paid in interest, compound ed. The amount which would accrue at simple interest would be $46.20, or more than twice the amount de posited on the twenty-first year, while the actual interest received would be two and a half times the last deposit-Besides, the interest on interest that is, the," excess produced by com pounding would amount to $7.39, or more than one-third of. the final and- i I saw the morning, with purple qui ver and burnished bow, etand tip-toe on the rorizon and shoot sunbeams at the vanishing darkness of night, and then reach up and gather th stars and hide . them in her bosom, and then bend . down and tickle the light till it woke with straws of light till it woke with laughter and with song. A thousand bugle-calls from the rosy fires of the east her alded her coming; a. thousand smiling meadows kissed her garmets as she passed, and ten thousand laughing gardens unfurled their flower-flags to greet her. The heart of the deep for est throbbed a tribute of bird-song and the bright waters rippled a mel ody of welcome. Yqung life and love, radiant with hope and sparkling with the dew-drops of exultant joy, came hand in hand, tripping and dancing in her ehining train, and I wished that the heaven of the morning might last forever.. I saw the evening hang her silver crescent on the sky and rival the splendor of the dawn with the glory of the twilight. -1 saw her wrap the shadows around her, and with a lull aby on her lips, rock the weary world to rest; then I saw her fill her dipper full of dew-drops and her basket full of dreams, and slip back to the horizon: of the - morning and steal the stars again. The -gardens furled their floweu-flags and the meadows fell asleep; the songs ot the deep forest melted into sighs, and the melancholy waters whispered a pensive good-night to the drowsy birds and sleepy hollows. Life and love,-with a halo of parting day upon their brows and the star-light tang led in their hair, walked arm in arm among the gathering shadows and wove all the sweet memories of the morning into their happy evening song, and I wished that the heaven of the evening might never end, So, The mornings come, the evenings go, Till raven locks turn white as snow. The evenings go, the mornings come, Till hearts are Still and lips are dumb. ' ' The morning steals the stars in vain, For evening steals them back again. Thus life steals us from the dust. We wake to think and sleep to dream, love, and laugh, and weep, and sing, and sigh, until death steals us back, to dust again. Extract from Gov. Bob Taylor's "Love, Laughter and Song." Guns of 14 and 16 inch caliber will bep laced at forts safeguarding both the Pacific and Atlantic en trances, commanding a radius of 15 I miles. The forts at the Pacific en- nance are constructed on . tnree is lands in Panama bay, at the very be ginning of the canal, Flamenco, Pe rico and Naos. These are huge mass es of volcanic rocks, behind which, safe . from the fire of any ship, no matter how powerful, the forts stand. The great Miraflores locks are seven miles inland from the forts, and no gun at the present time is powerful enought to send a shell the 22 miles intervening between the outside of the zone of fire from the forts and these locks which-control . the canal. Even " with the marvels of modern gunnery it would be as difficult to place a shell, even if ' it could be thrown tnat far, as .for a rifleman to hit a lead pencil, at a distance ot 2,000 yards. , JOHN KENDRICK BANGS WILL ECTURE TONIGHT AT THE QUEENS COLLEGE Hon. By Associated Press. San Francisco, March 9. Captain Charles A; Morris, a well known dredging engineer and who aided J P Holland in the construction of sub marines, died yesterday at Los Gatos near here. (Popular Mechanics.) Having invested nearly $375,000, 000 in the canal the United States is intent upon safeguarding that . tre mendous outlay against the possi bility of damage through foreign war. Fortification of the canal has been undertaken purely as an in surance matter. It is sought to make it impossible in time of war, for any enemy to take possession of the waterway, or to damage it to such an extent that the ships of the United Ctates could not use it at' will .
