body was jerked to the pulley

eight or ten ninntes after the

The deceased , was af seoiion
foreman and itwas his duty to
see that the belts were all ' on
when 'the mill 'started. When
the fatal accident occurred he
was putting on a belt with his
foot, throwing it on the machine
pulley, when his leg became
tangled in the belt, and his body
was jerked quickly to the ceiling.
The limb was' wound around
the shafting and torn loose at the
hip joint and his body dropped to
the floor. The limb.rernained pg
the phafting until, the machines
. '.
were stopped and it was take a
off. The machinery below was
spattered with blood and a por
tion of his bowels were thrown
some 20 feet and lodged on
another . machine.. 'Shreds of
flesh were' scattered and left
hanging to machinery several
feet in every direction. The
"terrible accident occurred within
view of a large number of
operatives,, but it was all done in
a second's time so that no
assistance could bo rendered.
The Meeting Closes at First Presbyterian

The Rev. W T Matthews, of
Hickory, has held two services
daily since his arriral on the 9th
and has had good audiences.
The congregation has enjoyed a
rare feast of spiritual food ' and
'has been trengthened and built
up underhis impressive presenta
tion of gospel truths. The pas
tor concluded tho weekly, ser
vices today, (Saturday) with a
special service to the children at
4 o'clock.

were taken to the hospital. Doc
tors say all will die.

A terrific earthquake occurred
on Friday evening in Mexico.
lit was most severe and fatal in
the State of Guerrero (which

In the city of Chilpancingo the
shake was very fatal. A church
in whiclj worshipers were assem
bled was shaken till the heavy
roof fell in upon the people. Tho
loss'of'life in thecitv is reckoned

The seismic disturbance lasted
for about fifty-five soconds.
Many houses and much valuable
property was practically ruined.
The-'eity of Mexico felt the
shock and suffered slight injury.
The usual nocturnal chorus
was disturbed recently by some
youngsters who did not appreci
ate feline standard of music.
