Julv hi.— The | body of Haywood Cur'i J . one of the two men drowned a week ago at the power plant heing constructed near this place on Dan river, was found several miles below the point where the men fell into the river. The body had lodged in a grape vine. Undertaker P. T. Harrington prepared 'he body for burial and it was forwarded to the home of the deceased for interment. No 'race of the other man. Mr. and Mrs. Sanders Rierson. Jr.. and Miss Estelle Rierson. of Winston-Salem, spent the week end here with their parents. Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Rierson. A birthday supper was tender ed Mr. W. L. Vaughn Saturday by Mrs. Vaughn and the children. The occasion was greatly enjoyed by the family and friends present. Considerable complaint is heard from visitors in regard to the detour through town, made necessary while water and sewer pipes are being installed. It has been suggested that the town authorities have some of the worst places on the detour smoothed over a little. Miss Elizabeth Fulton is spend ing some time at Piedmont Springs. Death of Prominent Citizen of Stoke* William E. Willis, aged 8( years, died at his home neat Germanton on Monday of this week. He had been in declin ing health for near three years and his condition had been seri ous for three days prior to hit death. The deceased was one of tht few old Confederate soldiers of ,ie county and was a member 'if the Disciples church. He was a well known farmer and was highly esteemed by all whe knew him. Mr. W illis has re sided in the Germanton com munity for 60 years. Surviving are his wite anc four sons, J. H. Willis, of Wins ton-Salem; A. M. Willis, of Germanton, E. C. MV illis, of Trinity, and E. V. Willis, of Roanoke. The funeral was conductec from the home by Rev. T. J Glenn and interment was made in the family burying plot neai by. Simpson, of Rock ingham county, brother of the late John T. Simpson and uncle of Mrs. John Taylor, of Dan bury. passed away at his home Saturday afternoon. Mr. Simp son was 49 years of age. and is survived by his wife and one daughter, Miss Jean Simpson. He also leaves a brother, Mr. Eugene Simpson, of Winston- Salem; a sister, Mrs. P. R. Webster, of Madison; two half brothers, B. H. Simpson, of Simpson's Store, N. C., and J D. Simpson, of Santa Anna, Texas. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at four o'clock with Rev. J. W. Knight officiating. The burial was at Mt. Bethel Church in Rocking ham county and about 2,000 people were in attendance. Mr. Simpson was ill only about two weeks and his con dition was not regarded seri ous until Friday. Stokes Convict Makes His Escape Eddie Roberts, colored, con victed of robbery at the la9t criminal term of Stokes court 'and sentenced to 3 years on the road, nude his escape from the county chain gang near Piedmont Springs yesterday, -'til Smith, J one of the guards, shot at the tnan as he ran into the woods but it is not known whether the loaii hit its mark or not. There are six or more men in the surveying party. Mr. L. J. Young, of Danbury, who is familiar with the territory being gone over, is with the party and is render ing the engineers valuable as sistance. Judge A M. Stack At Piedmont Springs Judge A. M. Stack was a vis itor h«fe yesterday. Mr. Stack is spending some time at Pied mont Springs in the interest of his health, which is not good, his many friends in Stokes will regret to know. Peter Gorrell Is Critically 111 The manv friends in this county of Peter A. Gorrell. of Winston-Salem, will regret to learn that he is seriously ill at a Winston-Salem hospital and nn Monday underwent an opera tion for appendicitis.
