Waildell, of this city, yesterday showed us a cane presented' to him in 1877 hy the late Commodore James Iredell Waddell, commander of the famous Confederate privateer ''Shenandoah." The cane was cut at Malacca, hy Commodore Waddell in the fall of ISoG, while attached to the United States Naval Squadron there on duty. The stick was placed away with other relics and .during the late civil war. Commodore Wad dell, after destroying -.about forty - nine whaling steamers olf the coast of New Foundland, seized one of the ships containing a valuable cargo of whale bluhl)er, oil and ivory. Se curing one of the teeth of a monster whale, he had the handle of the cane made out of the same, and presented the stick to Capt. F. N. Waddell. The inscription on the gold band around the ivory handle reads : "James I. Waddell to Fran cis N. Waddell, Oct. 0th, TS77." The cane, "proper, was carried around the world bv the gallant commander oi the famous.
