This is only a bit of Oriental rhetoric, a figurative way of emphasizing the 'power of the Almighty, who can make tho smallest things the ministers of his wroth ; but in the light of modern science it has become a literal truth. Some of man's most powerful and per sistent enemies are organisms so minute that a thousand of them would not equal the bulk or weight of a fly. The lord of creation, as he proudly styles himself, is unable to cope with the most infinitesimal of his subjects. They re fuse to acknowledge his sway, and wage perpetual warfare against bim. His ut most skill and ingenuity are taxed in resisting and guarding against their at tacks; and often, in spite of all his maneuvers, they out-general and defeat him. No hostile force of his own race could inflict such disaster upon him as do these microscopic representatives of the lowest forms of life. They plunder and devastate whole provinces, bringing ruin upon long-established and flourish ing industries, and poverty upon largo and prosperous communities. Neither tire nor Bword is so much to be dreaded, for the injury that they may do is tran sient n-' -'narablc, while these diininu t; -iitly take perma- 'v they its sand i. . miinimoth in the creatures U. . . Just now the mere nan these animalcuho is menaeii., u portant branch of our foreign jm merce. The trichina is disturbing the business relations of two continents; and not only merchants, but legislators and statesmen as well, are excited on tho subject. And what is this formid able trichina V A parasitic worm, about a hundredth of an inch in length, yet more terriblo to man than the anaconda or boa constrictor. Its very existence was unknown fifty years ago, and its real nature and habits were not under stood till within twenty years or so. The reader does not need to bo told that under certain circumstances it infests the flesh of the hog, and that the dis eased pork, if eaten by man without being thoroughly cooked, may transfer tho parasito to the human muscles, with dangerous and often futal results. No wonder that our foreign friends are alarmed when they are told that Ameri can pork is liable to be of this trichinous character. The reports may be false or exaggerated, perhaps setafloatby inter ested parties who want to keep our pork ontof their mprkets; but the trichina is none the loss a frightful reality, and the risk of its presence in pork cannot be too vigilantly guarded against both at home and abroad, from commercial no less than hygienio considerations. Hmtou Journal of Cliemislry. A Pinte warrior killed himself reoent Ir near Gold Hill, Nev., and his super stitious fellow Indians, who had never beforo had a case of suicide among them, Immediately deserted their village without even touching the body. J There is now a substance which is both professionally and popularly in dorsed, and concerning which, Mr." J. 13. Fersihweiller, Butteville, Oregon, writes: I have often read of the many cures effected by St. Jacobs Oil, and was persuaded to try tho remedy myself. I was a sufferer from rheumatism and ex perienced grcftt pains, my lor, being so swollen that I could not move it. 1 procured St Jacobs Oil, U'ied it freely and was cured. Increasing Hi Sales. Some of the Galveston peanut roast ers havo acquired the pernicious habit of offering for sale packages, which, after purchase, are found to be only h:df full of the healthful berries. Yes terday (iilhooly strolled up to one of these deceptive diameters and asked him: "How many peanuts do vou sell in a day?" " Some davs I sell two or three bush els." "I'll tell you how you can sell twice that quantity." ' How can I do it ?" asked the goober nan eagerly. " Simply by putting twice as many in package." The expression which came over the jan's face was like that which is ob crved on the face of an ambitious edi or when he looks through au exchauge or i pun ana unds it not. Ualrestun Louisville, Homo anil Farm. Frank O. Herring, Esq., of tho Cham pion Safe Works, 251 and 252 Broad way, New York, reports the use of St. Jacobs Oil for a stiffness and soreness of the shoulder, with most pleasant and efficacious effects, The effect on some people of the prophecy falsely ascribed to Mother Shipton, that the world will come to an end in 1881, was illustrated tho other day in Indiana, where tho sudden ap pearance of a strange cloud, aceonipaui(jd by a roaring wind, threw several villages in a panic.
