I'nited States Senator McLaurin is registered at the Hotel LaFayete. Art Treasures From Chinn. Hon. H. G- Squiers, United States secretary of legation at Pekin, is re turning: to this country for a visit, and brings with him a great quantity of curious, beautiful, and costly speci mens of Chinese art. According to the public reports, the collection is of great intrinsic value. It is said, indeed, that only a multi-millionaire could have af forded to purchase it had it been offer ed for sale under normal circum stances. As it happens, however, Mr. Quiers has enjoyed exceptional oppor tunities for the accumulation of Chi nese bric-a-brac without having to pay extravagant prices. He has been right there on the spot, prepared to improve the shining hours. All sorts of things come to him who waits, provided he selects his post of vigilance avith judg ment. And thus it turns out that Sec retary Squiers, who is not a million aire at all. but only a plain, modest, hard-working American diplomat, is able to present to the Metropolitan Museum of Art a collection of ceramics and so on worth a prince's ransom in the open market. Mr. Squiers wishes It to be distinct ly understood that this is not loot. The collection embraces not only por celains, but bronzes, ia-ory, carvings, &c. all of peculiar artistic merit and enormous value; but, although Mr. Squires is a comparatlarely poor mai according to the sordid standard of Wall street and rich only in the affec tionate approa-al of the state depart ment and the blessings of an untrou bled conscience, he is nevertheless in possession of the goods. We under stand that sea-eral railway cars were required to transport the collection from Pekin to the coast, and are not at all surprised to hear that the affar has attracted widespread attention on both sides of the Pacific. Self-seeking hucksters and so-called experts have been for years engaged in gathering art treasurers in the Orient for sale at large profit to the wealthy. What could be more natural than their concern, not to say dismay o'er this vast ship ment of really highclass curios by a bashful and retiring geneleman who seeks no worldly recompense for his patient devotion and desires only the proud consciousness of haadng embel ished his native land with pagan and ungodly spoils? It is true that in this country we haa-e a harsh name for gentlemen who purchase stolen goods, no matter with what noble and right eous intentions. No such ideas prevail, howea-er, in China. The Rev. Gilbert Reid. the Rev. Ament, and others of like authority haa-e explained to us the difference between direct and indirect plunder. It is one thing to go in per son and loot a Chinese palace or a heathen sanctuary. It Is a horse of another color to purchase honestly from the red-handed malefactors who haa-e wickedly done the robbing. Pos sibly some one of a carping disposition may want to know why an act regard ed with reprobation here passes un changed in far-off China. To such an J ill-regulated person we reply, simply, that we are bestowing our religion on China, but keep our mortality for home. The arria-al of the collection at New Y'ork and its subsequent display in the Metropolitan Museum will be awaited with unia-ersal solicitude. Let us re-ceia-e it with gratitude and wothout Ir-rea-erenl interrogatory. Washington Post. Z)r. Harter's WlfcD CHERRY BITTERS You Need It To keep your stomach in order. To stimulate your lazy liver.
