If one bid would give a clearer picture of their to tal iionor power, they prefer it without even considering that some other bid would enable their partners to know more about their suit lengths. A response of 2-No Trumps to an opening suit call is one of their favorite measures, in cases where a finer player would rather bid a suit and thus help the side hunt for a better declara tion. φ A 7 4 V J 9 5 4 2 φ Κ 3 Λ A 8 5 φ Κ J 10 ψ ίο s ♦ J 10 β + 9432 A Q S 6 5 2 V A 7 3 ♦ Q 9 S ψ Κ Q 6 ♦ A 8 7 4 2 *K Q 10 6 Dealer: South. South West North East 1 1 I Pass 2 NT Pass 3 X Pass 3 NT 2. 1 ♦ Pass 1 V Pass 2 J, Pass 3 y Pass 4 V North took a two-trick beating in his No Trump game contract at Table 1 of the duplicate where this hand was dealt. East led a spade and made it impossible for the de clarer to take nine tricks before losinc to the heart A. whereupon spadei tricks plus one in diamonds settled his hash. He would have gone down only one if he had driv en out the heart A before touch ing diamonds, but never could have made his game. At tables where North respond ed with hearts, either on his first turn or his second—or both, as occurred nt Table 2—the side went after a heart game, which was airtight against any defense, plus a couple of extra tricks. Nothing was lost except a trick to the heart A. With a situation on which a slam was so easy to make, you would think somebody would find the way to bid it—perhaps through North using the Black wood convention to probe for aces and kings after the heart fit was shown, or else by either just bid ding the slam himself or inviting it with 5-Hearts. But at all the 12 tables, nobody reached it, though every heart declarer took 12 tricks. All No Trump declarer* were set either one or two. •v * # Tomorrow's Problem φ None f 9 6 4 2 4 Λ Κ 97643 3 A None φ 10 8 7 6 ψ Q J Ν 4 3 ♦ Q 10 3 WE ¥ 10 S 5 * J 9 S 7 6 ς ♦ J 2 5 12 1 A Q 10 φ A Κ Q J !' 5 2 ψ A Κ 7 3 ♦ 5 A A (Dealer: North.
