G-OLID LEAF. I1EXDERSOX, N.C. THCKSDAY, Feb. 23, 188S. Crew Brigtt Tcbacco Only. It now a)ears that the ilcnianl fur isuriey toiiaceo stcu continues to in crease and th.U preparations are Ixrinij iaalc on a very extensive scale for a targe Western crop. The high prices in lite West have had a stimulating effect upon the Western farmers and an over crop seems unavoidable. With Mich a state things facing us it is well for us to pauso and ask what it means. It is well for us to consider, in time what such a course will result in, not so much to our Western friends, Imt how it will effect us here in Vir ginia and North Carolina. It seems to us that the inevitable J fae that must follow is i-lain as the ! Lroad day light, and um doubt k to very fair thinking man and yet we cannot too strongly emphasize our past warning to the growers of tobac co in this section. An over-cropped West vil put down the prices qvi all ' Tmv -gTOteA 6 " terfTno matter whether grown iu the Ohio Valley or in Piedmont Virginia and North Car olina. This we can write down as a settled fact, and the 'farmer who sets out with the intention of growing a big cr p of poor tobacco simply scat ters his energy on the thankless wind. And yet every planter will .say that he does not intend to grow poor tobacco but a big crop of fine leaf. Now that is the essence of absurdity and the big crops of nondescript stu.T grown in 1885 and 1SS6 fladi up in your mind a.s reminders of such a foolish cour.-,e. Set this doion as an un disputable truth that the man who groins poor tobacco this year will not t calizc for it the tost vf production. What then is the rcruedy? It ha uacn explained time and again am. yet it lcars rejetition. Make prepara lions for a full crop of all home sup pitcs and men Jay oil as many acres of vour best tobacco hind as can be well and properly cultivated. Devote what time you can give to tobacco to growing only the best and brightest. No other will pay you this year. Plant only so much as you can give all the care 11 needs. i nen it the over crop m other sections puts down the price of production it will not hurt you lour bright tobacco will bring good prices anyway and you will nave your home supplies to back you. Farmers, this advice is written after a thorugh study of the subject and is money to you who follow it. Any other course ii suicidal will you be guilty of that crime yourself?
