Of Max Figman the star comedian who appears in "The Man on the liox" at the Grand Theatre next Thursday evening, April 11th, and the play itself, a dramatic writer frays this: 'the most successful star and play on the road this season unquestionably is Max Figman in ''The Man on the Ilox.'" From the Atlantis to the Pacific oceans and from Manitoba to Texas, the testi mony of the press and public has been that of unstinted praise. There has i?ot been one dissenting voicj among the critics and from a monetary standpoint this attraction has been the envy of all competitors. ''Th. Man on the I'.ox" was dramatized from Harold McGrath's book of the same name, and, contrary to the usual run of book plays, has not proved a disappointment to the readers. The saliunt features of the story are fully retained and framed in an environment of strong and brisk dramatic action ex pressed in brilliant aud witty dialogue. The hero Gts Max Figman7 tempera ment like a glove and he has achieved a marvelous personal success. In fact, the critics regard him today as the leading exponent of light comedy on the Ameri can stage. He is an artist in every sense of the word and a strong disciple of the modern school of art. He unites with a magnetic personality a splendid method of expression and delivery, and possesses to a marked degree the quality most admired by the public serenity. IIw past achievements long ago entitled him to star but he has modestly with held until he found the proper vehicle and most satisfactory auspices. This he has found in the play in which he is staring this season. Mr. I igman could not have had a play written to order that fits him and his style so well as "The Man on the Box.7' He has scored heavily in the title role and is playing to enormous houses everywhere- The story of the play is founded on a joke and is fully of genuine comedy and heart in terest. It relates that Lieut. Worbur ton has seen a young lady on the steam er while returning from Europe who has won his heart but to whom he was un able to be introduced. At home in Wash ington his sister urges him to accompany her to the Embassy L5a.Il, but he declines. lie conceives the idea for a practical joke on his sister, aud arranges with the fam ily coachman to take his place on the return from the function, with the inten tiou cf driving at reckless speed, making his sister believe that the horses are run ning away, and then finally stopping them and lifting his sister out of the car riage and while in the coachman's livery implantiug a hearty kisss upon her cheek, lie carries out the program until the carriage calls are made when he for gets his proper number and by mistake gets for his "fare" two young ladies, one of whom happens to be the young lady who has won his heart. 1 he horses do run away with him, but he stops them and delivers the kiss as he planned, be fore he realizes the mistake. The conse quence is a police cell for the night with charges of reckless driving and abduc tion to face in the morning. ith this foundation a capital comedy has been written that is worth going miles to see. rimswick Inn Pine Beach, Va.
