Mr. Oscar Sherrill and Miss Gret

wife. It was a quiet affair in
the presence of only a few

mony was performed by Rev. Dr. -

rill has recently been licensed to
practice law. This profession
he will take up in his new field.
To the People
I have been authorized by the
proper authorities to secure op
tions on several" tracts of land
suitable for an orphanage. At
the next session of the Confer
ence, which will meet in about a
month, definite action will be
taken toward the, establishing of
an orphanage for all the territory
west of Greensboro. As Hick
ory is about the center of this
territory, and noted for its heal
thy climate, I feel sure that if
the proper effort is made the or
phanage will be located here.This
will mean a great deal for Hick
ory as there will ultimately be
from three to four hundred chil
dren, the support of whom must
come from the Conference at
large.
The land needed must not b
less than 100 acres, part of it
either on the railroad or in very
plain view of it. A considerable
portion should be wood land and
a small stream running through
it would be an advantage. It
should not be further than two
miles from the center of town.
Parties having such tracts for
sale, will please communicate
with me at once. 1

Mr. W. H. Shirer Dead. -
The death of Mr. W. H. Shirer
occured at his home in East
Hickory Tuesday evening about
7:30 o'clock after an illness of
several months from lung trouble.
While death came upon "him
very sudden, it was not surpris
ing to his people, and friends, as
his condition has been very ap
palling for some weeks. Mr.
Shirer and family have lived here
only a short time but have gain
ed many friends during their
stay. The sympathy of the good
people of our town is extended to
the family in the loss of a gcod
husband and father.
Congressional Committe Will
be in Hickory Soon.
The Congressional Committpe
appointed according to an act of
Congress to investigate those
sections of the country which
the proposed Appalachian Park
will cover, will be in Hickory the
twenty-ninth of this month.
Senators Overman andSimmons,
Congressman Webb, Thomas and
Page with • other distinguished
, men compose this committee.
Let Hickory extend to them a
warm wtteome. This committee
will report at the next session of
Congress and the nature of that
report will largely depend upon
the sentiments of the inhabitants
of those sections which will-com
pose the proposed National Park.
There is no doubt but that this
county is overwhelmingly in the
favor of the park.

The Mayor's Office Robbed.
i- Thursday night Mr. Ned Hayes
passing the mayor's office, saw
that some one had entered. He
: investigated and soon some one
had him by the throat and said:
• "If you tell I will kill you." Mr.
Hayes was game and promptly
i replied that he would report the
[ matter to the proper officials. A
scuffle followed and Mr. Hayes,
who is just recovering from a
[ broken leg, had difficulty in es
caping from the clutches of the
, intruder. Later investigation
* disclosed the fact that the only
; property that had been taken
, wis a half gallon jug of whiskey
■ which the mayor had confiscated
, from some blind tiger. The in
truder is kno .vn but Sis name is
withheld from the public for the
I present. He has not yet been
[ arrested, as he and the jug of
whiskey have left for parts un
, known.
