THURSDAY, JAN. 16,1908^ Admiral Brownson appears to be the latest addition to Mr. Roosevelt's list underisable citi zens. The man who Expects to see the Republican party reform the toriff is capable of raising foxes to guard his poultry. Perhaps Mr. Cortelyou thought a secretaryship in hand was worth more than a Presidential nomination in the future. Of course the man who said you could judge a town by its streets and hotels is an Annanias when he applies to Hickory. ' t Charlotte National Bank and Charlotte Trust Co., effect a con solidation, giving the new con cern $2,000,000 capital stock. Gov. Johnston says he don't want it any way which announce ment will please two parties — Johnston and the Democratic party. Jan. 14th, one hundred and seventy-five people lost their lives by the explosion of a gas tank in an opera house at Boyer ton, Pa. If Speaker Justice had been for the railroads and against the people, he would have been (felled a "conservative statesman" by the heelers who now abuse him. Judging by recent develop ments in North Carolina, a Dema gogue means a member of the legislature who tries to repre sent the people who elected him. By the way we wonder what has become of that gate that Justice Brown's opinion anounced that the Southern had to put at she Hickory depot? Surely we are not to be denied a great blessing like that forever. "What shall we do with our Expresident," asked Mr. Cleave land. At the risk of appearing inferertiment we rise to suggest that hereafter we should not put them one the salon roll of frome dulent insurance Companies. Those who try to make u« be lieve that a slight reduction in the passenger rate for a period of ninety days has brought the railroads to bankruptcy are Com mended to) the story of the theo logical professor who rebuked a a young student of his for some wild views which the student had advanced in a sermon. "Well, Professor," the latter unsevered defending himself, "don't the Bible tell us that men are saved by the foolishress of preaching?" "Yes, Sir," brus quely answered the Professor. But it dosen't say that anyone was ever saved by the preaching of follishness." WANTED—A strictly first class man in everv township in Western North Carolina to re present a high-grade financial institution. , With men of char acter standing a remunerative contract will be made. Address, J, A. Herndon, Asst. Supt. Agencies, Box 339, Hickory, N. C. A man who is able to keep his face closed saves a lot of time. SPEAKER JUSTICE AND HIS CRITICS. E. J. Justice is honest and he is capaole,/ chosen to the hign office of speaker of the House oi Representatives, he became the target for harsh and unjustified criticism solely because he chose to represent what he believed tc be the people's interest. Foi this he has been assailed with un precedented bitterness and de nounced without regard to trutl or decency by the miserable took of corporate influence, "lewd fellows of the baser sort" wh . "Crook the pregnant hinges OJ I the knee." Tiiat thrift man follow fawning.'' Such characters may be identi fied without trouble. Just as soon as any man demands a fair show for the public in their eyes he becomes a "demagogue," a "disturber" and a "radical." Whpt this state needs is a few more radicals of the Justice type and a considerably less number of unprincipled characters ready to blacken the characters of honest men at the bidding of the railrr-sds. If as we have seen stated, Mr. Justice opposes the proposed compromise of the rate cases, we think he is making a mistake. But we will have to have it on better authority than the w r ord of corporation tools be fore we will believe that he does oppose the compromise. And even if such is the case, we are perfectly satisfied that he is act ing in good faith and in perfect sincerity which is more than can be said for those who have as sailed him. All tuis manufactured hev.- and cry about "poor rail-roads" is unadulterated sham. Many of those same railroads have been notorious violators of the law for years and by discriminating against North Carolina in freight rates have robbed the state of thousands of dollars. As for the charge that the speaker promoted vote agitation in the hope of making fus, a meaner, false charge was never made and the man who made it if he has any spark of honesty left in his composition ought to be ashamed of himself. The town of Hickory has suf fered enough from the Southern Railway to know that particular Corporation is a stranger to Just ice and fair play. Such condemnation as that which has totally been visited upon the Justice is worth more to him than the highest tribute of praise. Congressman Webb's Bill. Congressman E. Y. Webb, the very able member from this dis trict has just introduced a bill known as an interstate and jug bill, and is designed to protect prohibition communities from the shipment of liquor from other States and giving prohibition territories the support of the government in enforcing u:e;r local regulations. The bill a; in troduced by Mr. Webb goes evei. further than the Dolliver Hep burn or Littlefield measure* an ; in justice to communities where prohibition is desired, ought to pass. It is hardly probable though that the measure will be favo' ably reported at this session as it is claimed by those who ought to know that Speaker Cannon has already forestalled favorable action by packing the committee with members who are opposed to such legislation. All the same, Congressman Webb is entitled to the thanks of all law abiding citizens for his efforts to protect them from this inter-state jug trade which is nullifying the prohibition law and debauching the communities. This is orth Remembering. Whenever you have a cough or cold just remember that Foley's Honey and Tar will cure it. Do not risk your by taking any but the genuine. It is in a yellow package. W. S. Martin &U>. Society News. Mrs. Frank Abernethy enter tained the Bridge club in her lovely new home for the first time Friday the 10th, The occasion was one of the most enjoyable of the entire season. The hostess' proverbial guod taste was in evidence every where as we passed from room to room and noted the elegant furnishings and dainty decora tions much of which were of the hostess own creations in art, and all combining to make a very cosy attractive home. Her living ympathy with her subject showed itself in her admiration for these 4 'Apostles of Temper ance." "The Harp that once thro' Tara's halls" was sung as a Trio at the close of the literary program. It is as Father Mathew said, a terrible thing to think that so much wholesome grain that God intended for the support of human life should be converted into a maddening poison for the destruction of man's body and soul. After current events and re freshments a delightful meeting was adjourned. The Round Dozen Book Club held its first meeting after the holidays on Wednesday Jan 18th, with Mrs. W. G. Fox, with a round dozen in attendance. After quotations-at roll call, a very interesting discussion of the books followed. The hostess book is "J.n the Cause of Freed om" and as she was unable to £t a -very ull account of the •!, , ~: ;, -ed Mrs. Ly ftoy Whitener to read in her the delightful little story for "The Gri de."
