D.) A close connection exists between these two cold weather and rheuma tism. Prof. Alex Haig, of London, has the most followers in the medical pro fession in the belief that the presence in the system of uric acid, or its salts in excess, is the real cause of rheu matism. Every one has recognized the difference in" the appearance of their water as soon as it gets cold; there is often a copious sediment of ''brickdust." Several causes may lead up to an accumulation of uric acid in the sys tem, which, in turn, causes rheuma tism or gout, or creaky joints, swollen lingers, or pamiui joints. For one ; reason the skin does not throw off the , uric acid, by profuse sweating, as in the hot weather, and the kidneys are unable to take care of the double bur-! !U-n. Another reason is that people ;do not drink as much water in cold i weather as in summer, which helps to' flush the kidneys. Again, they eat more meat in cold weather, and some! people are so susceptible that fchey jsoon develop rheumatism after eating! : meat. j At all such times persons should! ! drink copiously of hot water, say a! pint morr.in;: and night, and take1 Xnv.m throe or four times a day. This ! Arv,ric conica in tablet form and can! bo Iir.cl r.t almost any drug store.1 " unlives tno uric acid in the sys tem and carries it outward. I would advise everyone to take Anuric oc casionally, and continue for three or four weeks, and in that way avoid rheumatism, guot and many of the I'Miiful disorders due to uric acid in the system. Make yourself healthy and strong by open-air exercise and diet. Then cleanse the liver by occasionally stim ulating its action with a pleasant laxative composed of the May-apple, dried juice of aloes, and root of jalap. Few American wild animals are more widely known or excite more popular injteres(t than the raccoon, which occupies most of the wooded parts of North America from the southern border of Canada to Pana na, with the exception of the hieher mountain ranges. Their diet is extraordinarily vari ed, and includes fresh water clams, crawi-fish, frogs, turtles, birds and their eggs, poultry, nuts, fruit and reen corn. When near winter they have a curious and unique habit of washing their food before eating it. Their fondness for green corn leads them into frequent danger, for which bottom land corn tempts them way irom tneir usual haunts raccoon hunting with dogs at night becomes an especially favored sport. Raccoons, are evxtraordiarilv intelligent nniJ mals and make interesting and amusing pets. IRaccoons began to figure in uor frontier literally at an early date. ''Coonskin" caps, with the ringed tails hanging like plumes, make the fa vorite headgear of many pioneer hunters, and "coonskins" were a recognized article of barter at coun try stores. (Now that the increasing occupation oi the country is crowd ing out more and ..more of our wild life, it is a pleasure to note the persistence with which these char acteristic and mtferesting animals continue to bold their own in so much of their original rante.
