ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORTS THURSDAY, JULY ID. 1917 ON KKilir TO MAKE WAR JJisnumk, like Frederick the Great, believed it was not immoral for a nation that wanted a piece of territory to provoke a war so that it could be seized. Silesia was addcl to the German empire in this way by Frederick. J'.Lsmarck provoked three wars, th last with France, and obtained Alsace-Lorraine. He believed that if a state could deliberately cans? u war and get away with it that thn gain in spoils and patriotism of th peoplo was worth more than the cos... I'.ernhardi in his book, "Germany and the Next War," subscribes t,o this dictrine, and he points out how Germany was expected to get away with a war for improving it., position in the world. This boos was written in October, It'll. To take the proposed enemy by surprise, to strike him when discord was loudest note to bo heard, and when tht-ro was every chance to win that was the correct thing. When the great war broke out in 11)11, now nearly three years ago, Fngland was torn with dissension. The Irish home rule problem w:is acute and the Liberals were in con trol of the government. These men were for peace at almost any pric;?, and the Germans knew it. Franc0 had begun to strengthen its army and Russia was building up a war machine. In a few years Franco and Russia would have been a match fur Germany, it was felt. Tin Merlin theory was to buy Kngiand on", defeat1 France before Russia could mobilize and then to settle with Kngiand after there were no enemies on the continent. How this plant was foiled eery reader knows today. Germany had made tremendous preparations for the struggle and the junkers had it fig ured out to the day when their ar my would be in Paris. But Belgium and Kngiand acted noble parts, 11 nd von K luck's army was hurled back at the vt-ry gate of Paris. Since that time Germany has .succeeded in arriving practically ev ery country in the world on the side of its enemies. German philosophy, which believed that the morality of a state is vast ly different from the morality of an individual, doubtless will be revised when the German people turn the dishonest gang out of office in Berlin. Senator Lodge, for whom we lnve expressed admiration in the past, Hhould have more sense than to make attacks on the administration for choosing camp sites in the south and for the manner in which the draft army is to be selected. Common nenso would dictate the necessity of avoiding the rigors of the New Kng iand climate next winter, and the war department has done the best it could in the raising of the new ar my. We observe in this connection that Senator Lodge is not offering any suggestion for improvement. A scholarly gentleman writes us: "Do you know your old Record is an hard to lay down, once I open the wrapper, ns the Literary Digest? I congratulate you on tho stufT you choose for fillers." Our brother is indulging in hyperbolo a weo mite but tho Record endeavors each day to select articles in which the whole world is interested, and we feel re paid if one-fourth of our readers read the various clippings in this paper. The chorus that used to sing, "Why don't the British . - - - - w r isv- v . disbanded for tho period of tho war. Besides carrying on extensive opera tions on tho seven seas, our English cousins aro engaged part of tho time in France, Italy. Macedonia, Pales tine, Persia, Russia, Africa and a few other places. Tho sun never sets on tho activities of British armed forces. You can't put French over on our North Carolina linotype operators. The Mount Olive News, which appear ed Inst week, started out with the Intention of giving the raison d'etre of that paper, but Editor John C. Tip ton uoccjw to him (was made to say "The reason I started." It is about the same thing, brother, and should warn you to stick to youi mother dialect. MR. POU'S CAUSE When it is known that Jaiiies H. Pou of Raleigh is to address a jury, the court house is packed with peo ple for niilcs around the highbrow being conspicuous by his presence. This is to say that Mr. Pou's elo quence is such that the crowd la drawn to him like steel to a mag net. Of his war address in Thomas-, villo Charity and Children says: Hon. J. II. Pou of Raleigh deliv ered on Sunday evening in the audi torium an address on the war that we have not heard equaled by any man. It is impossible to describe it. You. must hear it in order to understand. Mr. Pou is giving all he earns to teh cause and his soul is aflame with the subject. He has made the su preme sacrifice, his only son being in the service. Ha ought to be heard in every county in North Carolina. He knows European history as well as he knows his Blackstone and has a fa cility for imparing his knowledge that will make an audience stay with him for hours. Mr. Tou is doing his work for patriotism, ho not needing money or honors at the hands of his fellowmen. Wle wish he could bt induced to visit Hickory. Blest bo a certain amount of rain that falls. RED CROSS SUBSCRHTIONS A RIO NOW DUN IN HICKORY The central Red Cross committee, named by Mayor Yount to solicit funds for the war relief fund of the national association, has been in structed to make collections and re turn them promptly and the commit tee urges all people who have sub scribed to the cause to send checks to the First Nr:onal Bank.
