Military training in the grade schools will be a source of pleasure and benefit to the boys. Americans too long have neglected the health feature in the schools. Wo should have some of those old- fashioned Fourth of July orators turn loose and tell us how tho United States can lick tho world. THURSDAY, SEPT 13, 1917 NEED NINE MONTHS Hickory boys and girls will go to school Monday, but unlike boys and girls in other towns they will have only an eight months school and thov an? exnected to accomplish as much in eight months as other chil dren in nino. In the course of 10 years in school, they lose an entire year, and are that much behind oth er children when they complete the course of study. Happily, Hickory people 'already realize the defects in tho schoo system. The term will not be leng. thened this year, but it will bo cx tended next year, If tho wishes o: far-sighted men and women are al: lowed to prevail. We are not too poor to provide for our children. If Hickory is short one whole school month, however, it is no fthort on most of the other facif- itles for a first class school system New courses have been established and business and domestic science wii be taught by competent instructors The schools will prepare for college and business at the same time. Argentine acted promptly in send ing passports to Count Luxburg German charge at Buenos Aire3 whose nefarious telegrams to the Berlin government have not bee surpassed in villany by any others thus far detected. This one act alone shows that President Wilson was eternally right in asserting that an enduring peace could not be as sured as long as the present crowd is in control of the German govern ment. A highwayman will strike you down at any minute. Thi3 is the last month in whicIT tho submarines will have a better chance at merchant ships. The short winter days will favor the mer. chantmen and by the time the cond' tions are again favorable for the pi rate3, some way of checking them y bo found. In any event some fast, armed ships will be in commis sion, and they are about as danger ous as a patrol boat. Fersons who think the situation is serious for the allies must remember that the central powers have been in a bad position all along and thaf only a smattering of what happens -in those countries is allowed to seep through the censor. Persons who have been in Germany, for instance, say that conditions are very bad thoro' ' .u&m Colonel Roosevelt insists that the devilish Hohenzollerns shalf go. The world was made pretty safe for do mocracy when the Stuarts,, German Georges and Bourbons were elimi nated in England and France, and it may bo that the colonel will have his way. Wbnder if the same interests that aro having the women and children of Germany wire petitions against accepting peace are the same that financed the German campaign in tht .United States for several years be for the tfnited States was forcec into tho conflict. The Alexander ferry is in opera tion, but people who want to go to Caldwell or come to Hickory are forced to make a long trip by way of Rhodhiss. Somebody should give the Rhodhiss and Burke county folk3 a sFver cup. That submarine story seemed too good to be true, and the correction later that one U-boat probably had been sunk was a severe disappoint ment. (Stijl, if the Americans got one submarine, it wa3 something to be thankful for. Premier Kerensky undoubtedly made a mistake in taking a coursa that was sure to eliminate all of h's high generals. One does not wain to lead an army, whose members are likely to shoot him at any time. The confirmed pessimist must be having the best time in his life. M ORG ANTON NEWS NOTES Perhaps a few personal items and other dope from hero might interest Hickory folks folks who read &nd sit up and take notice. It feels like frost today, (Tuesday; but that wl'l be put off two weeks vet. Four weeks from now Unci. Jack Frost wilj be hare with his biting teeth well trained. Some excitement here because the governor pardoned John Kincaid, . m . i a i A 1 negro, ot tne 14 wno were recently sent to the chain gang for retailing. Since the good people here, re gardless of race, class, business, re ligion or politics, got together ana said the liquor laws must be enforc ed and blind tigers must go out of business, one seldom sees any signs of old booze around. iBusinoss of all kinds seems to be as lively as ever and a little more. The people are in fine spirits. The Methodist people are preparing to have a big meeting to begin tonight All are doing all they can to can all the fruit they can. Yesterday looked like Hickory had moved up here, or rather down here: Mayor i ount was a visitor here. Be sides him we saw T. T. Hamtftoi., A. P. Wfhitener. A. R. Flanagan, Da Fry, J. T. Lline, Waites Abee ana Wdilker Lyerly. And this morning we saw Mr. Lee 0. Sigmon here on his way home with 15 fat lambs and one calf for his market. Saturday evening we ex. pect to nnu au tne good folks oi Hickory lamb like full of good mut ton. It makes our Imouth watei but no use. It was our pleasure to meet Edv- tor Clark of the Landmark here to day. He was attending a meeting of the directors of tho State Hos pital of which he i3 a member. Mr oiarK, present company excepted, is the best aVl-round editor in the state safe, sound and sane on all sub jects. C. MARKED DECREASE IN THE LOSS OF VESSELS ijonaon, &ept 16 a marked de crease in the destruction of British merchant vessels by mines or subma rines is indicated in the weekly ad miralty statement issued last even mg. Twelve vessels of more than 1,000 tons and six of less than l,60o tons were sent to the bottom, as com pared with 20 in the large and three in the small catagory sunk the pre viouis week. Last night's statement shows tha four fishing vessels also were lost. lhe foregoing admiralty state ment shows the smallest number of large British vessels sunk bv mines or submarines since 'Germany last rebruary began her intensified sub marine campaign.
