DEC. 1. 1U17 ALLIES WON MOKE Ft. !:!; !I. S'monds, in his monthly :t ;. i t' the war for the American fjevi. f Review makes the point that x!k' (Ionium victory in Italy will not he ih ci.-i've unless it undermines the morale of the people of Europe. France and the United States. At the time -Mr. Simoruls wrote on November lo it seemed tint the It alian armies might sustain a crushing blow, but since that time they not only hav held the line of the Plave, but have been able to attack the Austrian. Mr. Simondg is a discipl- to the western front. He believes that the decision will be won there unless Germany is able to win by nego tiation, as the leaders in the central powers have tried to do from time to time. The Italian venture was so much lost, from the western front, so many Gorman guns and so many German troops deflected to a rela tively unimportant area in the hope of putting the Italians out of the war. These men and guns might have been turned against the Brit ish, French and Americans. We see today that Italy is not, out of tho war, but that the country on the other hand is contesting all the more bitterly. The German cam paign, in spite of 250,000 prisoners, may prove a failure, and if it doesn't bring peace, it will bo regarded as a failure by the German general staff. Mr. Simonds reviews the Russian and submarine situations and in sists that the allies have had the best of the year's fighting. In answer to a number of questions as to how long it will take the allies to drive the Germans out of France at the rate of about six miles a year, he points to the great retirement on the Sommo anl looks confidently to a German withdrawal from practical ly all of France soon. The situation look;-! bad its one views a simvlo angle, bat, a? a wnole it is much letter for the allies than for the central powers. If wo could say where the war tax is to fall, wo should ho in favor of. laying it on, my masters. These folks v.i'o takt- no interest in any thing except dividends and who are not touched by ordinary and extraor dinary taxation would know that was is what it i3 and then plus for interest. Tho idea of Mr. Kitchen and some other gents, who have fooled many of the people of course, was to make war taxes so unpopular that most folks would bo glad to take a shot at Germany's being merciful t,o us rath er than going down into their pockets and delivering all they had. If we could grow celery like Mr. V. E. Miller, who could give them a few points in Kalamzoo, we would make several hundred dollars a year on the side. His p'.p.nts cannot bo beaten. It begins to look as if the de fense will try to prove that Mrs. King met her death accircntally be cause Gaston 15. Means had squan dered much of her fortune. Thoso Rhode Island Reds, of whom wo spoke at length a month back, have begun to earn their daily feeds, bless their hearts! A lot of people will give Christ mas presents this year, while others will do well if they have the price of a Christmas card. Rev. and Mrs. Robert M. Courtney already have won their place into the heart3 of the Methodist congregation. Naturally, a greater sensation is made by this appeal from a distin guished conservative like the mar- j ijuis of Lansdowne. a verteran , statesman who was xoreig.i ini-i.-ici "n the cabinets of Lord Salisbury and Mr. Hal four and has been vic-mov of India and governor-general of .'anada. His letter, published in the Daily Telegraph after being refuted by the Times, is called by F.onar Law, "a disaster" but it may prove lit herwiso If Lord Landsdowne -ets little support in the press, that newspapers ' little includes some which have more than once given the j . n,iviVa t.bo noirleet of : "WM'llUHllH ' r,-- which has proved disastrous. this In the matter ot war aims country has been obliged to act with" extreme discretion because- of Us; position as an outsider. In the other entente countries lw.ro Vvivo been confuted cross cui- rents, a growing demand for the r;j moditication of war aims creating a :T strong opposition even to reopening the matter. For this reluctance ,K there was no little justification in the 3 fact that delicate and tangled re- j g lations among the powers were m volvcd and that for the allies the military map' has been unfavorable for the' discussion of peace terms. If the question could be indefinitely postponed, there was pome reason for postponing it, but it has long been apparent that the issue was bound to come up, and that procrastina-, a tion in meeting it might le more , jgj dangerous than prompt and eoura-.gg geous action. : 3 On the same day with the appear jgS ance of Lord Lansdowne's letter tho.QI bolsheviki published another vnstai - ment of secret documents, indmiir , ; no acrecmeni. ainuui; uu-ai xjumm.
