Applicants for Insurance Often Rejected An examining physician for one of the prominent Life Insurance Companies, in an interview of the subject, made the astonishing statement that one reason why so many applicants for insurance are rejected is because kidney trouble is so common to the American peo ple, and the large majority of those whose applications are de clined do not even suspect that they have the disease. Judging from reports from drug gists who are constantly in direct touch with the public, there is one jprenarationj that ,has .been very successful in overcoming these con ditions. The mild and healing in fluence of Dr. Kilmer's Swamp- Root is soon realized. It stands the highest for its remarkable rec ord of success. We find that Swamp-Root is strictly an herbal compound and we would advise our readers who feel in need of such a remedy to give it a trial. It is on sale at all drug stores in bottles of two sizes, min imum and large. However, if you wish first to test this great preparation send, ten cents to Dr. Kilmer & Co., Bing hampton, N. Y., for a sample bottle. When writing ,be sure and mention the Hickory Daily Record. adv 1 Fraternal Directory nv'ipiiTMiMMnmi!miHHnttm tmuumtt'.umwmttttmmmta Hickory Lodge No. 343 A. F. & A. M. "Dr. J. A. Nydegger of the United States public health service says that in sanitary and neglected conditions of rural schoolhouses are responsible for 75 per cent of the physical de fects which are today barring men from the United States forces. School houses in the country are ap parently more to blame than those in the city. Overheating at times, underheating at times and' underven tilation all the time were the three conditions most at fault. '"School houses must be made more than air tight boxes," says the state board of health. "A safe temperature is one kept around 70 degrees by the thermometer. No school room should be without a good thermometer and it should be the duty of some one to see that the temperature lat rio i i-tt rises far above or below 70 degrees. This degree of temperature is recommen ded for the children's minds as well as their health. They feel better and work better when not too warm. lhis degree of heat is sufficient to keep every one warm and comfor table provided they are properly clothed, and at the same time will prevent their chilling when they go out into the open air. "Nothing is more important in the schoolroom than fresh air. Ventila tion is more essential than books. Every school should have some ar rangements whereby fresh air can be admitted freely without chilling '.he pupils. Fortunately for the school children of North Carolina, because of our mild climate this can be done, through the windows, espe :ially if the windows are provided with deflectors. These are wide boards or pieces of glass as long as the window is wide placed slantwise !n front of an open window on the sill, which turn the current of air upward " into the room, thus avoid ing drafts or direct currents. Win dows should be kept lowered from lhe top. School rooms should be veil aired out at each recess.' "QJ course good lighting which pomes only from plenty of windows is especially important to avoid eye strains and inefficient work. No de cent school will now tolerate the -ommon towel or the common drink ing cup, neither will it have other :han sanitary toilets. Provision should be made for washing the hands after each recess." THE INTER-ALLIES) WAR COUNCIL SESSIONS END Paris, Deci 4. The inter-allied war conference was closed with a brief address by Colonel House, chairman of the American mission. Colonel House, who delivered the closing address at the request of Premier Clemenceau. said: "M. Clemenceau, the president of the French council, in welcoming the delegates to this conference, declared that we had met to work. His words were phophetic. There has been coordination and a unity of purpose which promise great results for the future. It is my deep conviction that by this unity and by con centrating efforts we shall be able to arrive at the goal which we have set out to reach. "In behalf of my colleagues I want to avail myself of this occasion to thank the officials of the French government, and through them the French people, for the warm welcome and great consideration they have shown us. In coming to France we have felt that we were coming to the house of our friends. Ever since our government was founded there has been a bond of interest and sympathy between us a sympa thy which this war has fanned into a passion(ate admiration. The his tory of France is a history of cour age and sacrifice. Therefore the great deeds which have illuminated the last three years came as no surprise to us of America. We knew that when called upon France would rise to a splendid achievement and would add lustre to her name. "America salutes France and her heroic sons and feels honored to fight by the side of so gallant a com rade." A CARD OF THANKS We hereby wish to extend our sin cere th'anks to our friends and neighbors for their help and for their many kind acts extended to us during the sickness and death of our mother and grand mother, with deepest gratitude. The demand for ships will not end with the cessation of hostilities; it should, indeed, be of greater magni tude than is generally believed, for many of the older vessels now im pressed into service must be relegat ed to the scrapheap while the wast age of war as it effects vessels of all classes, must be made good. It is by no means certain that tan dardized vessels, soon to be launched in large numbers, will meet the needs of commerce under conditions of peace, although they are well suit ed to meet the emergencies of war. Many new fields of trade, now lying fallow, must be entered, . and these will require vessels of special type, designed and altered from time to time as experience demands. Mor eover, our yards may expect orders from other countries for tonnage to which must be added the require ment of our own passenger traffic throughout the world. One result of the activities of the emergency fleet corporation's engi neers, in combination with those of the shipbuilding companies has been elimination of much unskilled labor and the substitution therefor of modern machinery. Hence, with steel and coal abundant and virtual ly at the back door of the wards, our ship-builders may look for a period of real competition and have little fear of being underbid in the mar ket. The old theory that shipbuild ing is an art handed down from one generation to another no longer holds good. Not only in the United States, but in other countries, men who knew nothing about the build ing of ships four years ago, are are launching vessels today, and we are witnessing a revolution in the industry and may flatter our selves that new methods created on this side of the Atlantic will sup plant those in vogue before the war VLADIMIR SCHNFUR ALSO WORKED IN SAN FRANCISCO jan Francisco, Dec. 4. 'Vladimir Scheneur, said to have been a Ger man spy, and now a member of the Bolsheviki peace commission, was formerly a waiter and elevator op erator in San Francisco, according to the Russian consul-general. iSchneur had been here an exile from Russia, about a year previous to the revolution which deposed former Czar ' Nicholas, attaches of the con sulate said. During the time he was here, Schnuer continued his activities in behalf of the Russian revolution, and was a prominent leader of the San Francisco society for coopera tion with the Russian revolution, it wa's said at the consulate. Near ly all members of the society have since returned to Russia. BE OPTIMISTIC iTIdre's Good News for Hickory Res idents (Have you a pain in the small of the back?
