MEMREE iT-lT ' ASSOCIATED I :L: 3 TUESDAY OCTOBER 21, 191" THE CEMETERY , In the upkeep of the etmeter., . of the people of Hickory are intjr- j ested, the Community Club and city j council and all other organizations, j A committee from the Community I Club will appear before the counci' j tonight to urge that the burying ; ground be kept in good condition. That is a reasonable request. j Manifestly Hickory should have a : cemetery policy. The revenues from j the sale of lots should be great en ough to insure proper upkeep of the graves and grounds or else the mon y should be raised in some other manner. A caretaker could put in all his time making beautiful the last resting places of many good people. What the Record suggests is that some plan whereby a caretaker may be employed be adopted by the city. Before such a plan is adopted, it will be well if council already is not in possession of the information to get information from other cities and ad opt the plan that would best suit here. That would be acceptable all around. It will cost money to keep Oakwood cemetery in good condition, but that is a' duty we owe to the dead, if not to the living. The best means of rais ing the money and spending it to the best purpose is what confronts the city. IT'S GOING OVER There has been nothing quite so in fectious as the campaign to raise; $300,000 for Lenoir College endow ment.. Everybody is helping some; many people are doing their level best to put the college where it belongs, and by the end of the week it is con fidently expected that the full amount will be raised. Men and women are thinking in larger terms than ever be fore and members of the Tennessee synod are giving mere liberally than they have ever given to any other cause. Hickory people this week will make their contributions and rhere is every reason to believe that they will show a proptr appreciation of ths op portunity afforded them to help the college, city and s." ' ';. r. The most serious charge yet mack against the federal trade commission was launched by Senator Watson, Re publican of Indiana, who caded names and quoted words of the investigating force. The senator disclaimed any sympathy with the packers, but he at tempted to show that the object of some of the investigators was to de stroy governmcnta charge that, if substantiated, will discredit much of the good work the commission already has done. The Record's big press, after at tempting to make the run yestarday afternoon, is now on the job, we as sume, though we will not feel easy Until it has been in operation for sev eral weeks. Like all strange machin cry, it requires considerable tinkering With and probably some cussing before it will deliver the goods, but it will do it. eventually. The edition was late yesterday afternoon, and it may be late again, but it came from the Cox duplex, and looked pretty good. We are hopeful that in a few days the press will be doing good work. ' Mr. J. F. Browne of Anderson, S. C, expert pressman, installed the Record's bie- nress and will stay with it until it is running smoothly. It was a real task that confronted him, but, ne naa me macnine worKing in exactly two weeks after he came here and be - can unpacking.
