The gravity of the offence, therefore, ccnuot be over-estimated, and, as said in the opening sentence of this arti- t cle, the people have never realized the enormity of the transaction. It is worth a great deal, to be sure, that Satterfield should have to come clown with $250 for his fail ure to discharge his public duties, and more still that Brown should have to do time on the public roads for his part in the affair. The effect will be to make public officers generally not only honest but faithful to their trusts; but if there is anything whatever behind the laches and the corruption of these hirelings it ought to be brought to the surtace and the re maining criminals exposed and punished. The State should be re lieved of any sort of danger of a recurrence of an incident of this ind, and this can only be done by the letting in of every ray of light upon this one.
