And just as loug aa so much mniifly is used in any campaign, just so long we will be unable to get an honest expression of what the people really think and believe to be to their best interest, and just so long will the corrupt system of .monopoly and grasping trusts and combines oppress the people, even in the face of the' present stringent Democrat ic laws on our State and Nation's statute books against their exis- tecce. Money is a wonderlul per suader, and influences men's minds when no argument that could be brought to bear upon them would After spending it, and, in their calmer moments, they regret their actions. We see this desire for the gratifications of our present needs, and forgetful ness of the future, ex emplified in the early history of mankind. Where Esau- sold his A WORD. I havo always maintained that the Populist party standi for noth ing which is Democratic. I believe that part' stands for centraliza tion and paternalism, if its public declarations are to lw believed. At best, it is an organization sapa ate and distinct from the Demo cratic party. In lfcOO I was against surrender ing to the Alliance. In li(J2 I de nounced Butler's game to capture the Democratic organization. In! 1804 I was against fusion of Popu lists with Republicans, and- said there was no principle in it In 1S95 I denounced' the legislature which assembled in the city of Ra leigh. In 1890 I believe I was right in 1890, 1692, 16W, and in 189o. I have all the while de nounced the tendency of the Dem ocratic party of this State toward fusion with Populists. Last week I, as editor of this paper, wrote an editorial, saying that I would not vote the electoral ticket fixed up by the Democratic State Executive Committee. I said that it was as bad to vote for the five Democrats on that ticket as it was to vote it Eyes Examin tl Froo of hargo. Dr. O. ANNOUNCEMENT. yith this issue, I take hold of the' editorial department of the Lincoln Democrat, and shall, in my humble way endeavor to main tain Us purity of purpose and in tegrity of j statement, licit h as a newspaper and also as a Democrat ic organ,, on the high platform our country land town deserve, al ways striving to promote the in terest of the honest people in coun try, State and nation as best I can, with an eye steadily fixed upon justice, fairnels and impartiality, towards all parties irrespective of of race, color, class or previous .conditions of servitude, in matters of public interest. And in order to effect this end, I shall use due diligence to gather all news from -the different sections of the coun try that is mete to be published and express my views out fearless ily and impartially, on the various subjects of general interest, that present themselve. . S. G. Finley, Editor. The Morganton Convocation. The Morganton Convocation met at Grace church on Sept. 23rd. at 10 o'clock a. m. The Rev. Dr. Wet more was elected chairman and the Rev. Mr. Phelps, Secreta ry. The Rev. J. A. Deal, of Frank lin, preached at 11 o'clock and gave his audience a sermon ot real force and ability. Alter the administra tion of the holy communion, the Convocation was called to order when 'tne iolldwmg proceedings were Lad : The Bishop appointed a com mittee on new parishes with Rev. C. Satierlee as chairman. Rev. J A Deal was elected Dean of the Waynesville Convocation and W A Rice, Secretary. Rev Dr Wetmore was elected Dean of the Lincolnton Convocation and Mr Wetmore, Secretary. Rev C Satterlee was elected Dean of the Morganton Convocation and Rev Mr Weston, Secretary. At 9 o'clock p. m. Bishop Chesh ire delivered an instructive -and in- the Democrat who votes half of a ticket, which is only up by the grace of our StaU Committee, is himself a fusiouist. I need not go into details here. Those who sup port, give aid, comfort and shelter to those who are fusionists, who have surrendered to the Populists, are no bettnr than Populists and are to all ;nw its and purposes as great fusunist as those who vote that whole ticket. I would as soon vote for those Populists ou that ticket as to vote for the Democrats, so called, who are on it. But those utterances did uot meet the approval of Mr. S. G. Finley, who is also interested in this paper. Disagreement was the result. The editorial did not ap pear. I have, in the meantime, re tired from The Democrat. I un derstand Mr. Finlev will continue to conduct the paper. Of course, I am sorry that 1 am not. enough in sympathy with those who are conducting this campaign to take an active part with them in it. I am aware there are those who are ready to criticise my ac tion in this matter. To such I would say: I have no interest in being a Democrat other than to see the principles of that party carried out in the conduct of this government." When my principles are sold, I shall refuse to be sold with them. If you, as a Democrat, refuse to vote for the five Populists on the electoral ticket how can you accuse me of giving McKinley half a vote? Y ou, bvthe same reason ing are giving him a quarter of a vote yourself 1 Then, this deal means that Democrats are estopped from d?nouucing those who are putting the State in the hands of Russell and his gang. I do not ask Democrats to follow me. I am not posing as a martyr or a leader. I shall never vote for McKinley. I shall not vote for Palmer and Buckuer either. I shall refuse to vote for Bryan also, as long as I am forced to vote for Populiists in order to get to do it. Some Democrats sayjt is now too late to talk about fusion, that the party is powerless to prevent it, that my duty was to submit si lently to the action uf the commit tee, attend to my own business, and vote for the Democrats on the ticket and scratch the other nanus I need hardly say that such poli tics is insincere and hypocritical. No! I will never wish for the duv Loyd Items. ; A frw linei from your huniM' corretpoudai.i may (irhap9 iutvr ?st tr.ine oiih who Know a little of North Brcn.k. The Rev.
