OSBORNE, OF MECZLE-jS-BURG- AS TO MR. RHODES. ' The' time is fast drawing near when we are to vote in Lincoln county to execute tho laws of our county. , Would it be wise to vote for C. H. Rhodes and send him out to take care of the law-breakers, that we, as tax-payers, may bear the burden of unnecessary prosecution brought on by the failure of an of ficer to do his duty? Rhodes i9the ever-to-be-remembered Sheriff, who has proven a burden to our county. He is the man who went, with the law nu his side, to arre9t a man near town and was run off by an old . man bent with age. a boy on crutches and - i two vouns women. Mr, Rhodes dreamed that he wa9 an officer bem resisted and came to town for a posse to aid iu the arrest of this mixture of old-age. crutches and woman's charm3. Of course thi9 was investigated r. court at a cost to the county, and we suppose to the High Sheriffs delight, as this is not his first in dulgence in lines of a like kind. We are sure that the above arose from fear on the part of Mr; Rhodes when there was no reason for fear. What would he do in the face ot cause for alarm ? Consult tho court records and see what he has done, find hundreds of dollars taxed against the county because of Rhodes' ehort-comincs. Ask Jack DeLane how he treats the couuty in matter of receipts, aud then elect him again to turn down one IMPORTING ILLEGAL VOTERS. STAT 12 NEWH. Rhodes may plead ignorance and inexperience in office, as to the foregoing, although he had been exercising the duties of that office lor over a year. And later we find that by reason of his careless bus iness method in collecting the tax es, that there " was a deficiency of the county's fund, and somebody was accused ot having ben guilty ot embezzlement, the cost of in vestigating which, charges if found to be true or not, must be paid by the tax payers of Lincoln county, and as yet the truthfulness of the said cliargw has not. been estab-hshed. The trouble litigants have to get' tneir papers and propeny is great, and in every instance when there is complication the sheriff gets so mixed up as to cause no end of lawsuits bv reason of improper service, or unlawful buying, failure to sell etc. And, in fact, it is nec essary to give him a bond for most every paper he owns, causing not only unnecessary court cost to every citizen who tries to protect his rights by law; but also putting the county to additional expenses for holding courts, and the unfor tunate litigant wishes be had aban doued his right. For an illustra tion, the complications arising ou of the claimant against Knight and Morrison, or tho Graham Gold Minps. When officers levied aud seized upon the same personal property each and every on? for bidding the otner to sell under ex ecution even when a boud of twice It is distressing to his great host of friends to lpnrn thnt. We fondly hope that he will be elected to redeem the State of $4000. before he would sell enough personal property to satisfy a judgment of .$100. The worst thing of all was what Rhodes said to Dr.. W. C. Riser, From the .state of affairs up to wheQ Kier stated at Reepsville this time hs week, we state it as our deliberate opinion that we be lieve W. J. Bryan will be our next Resident. It is incumbent, how ever, upon every man to vote the iujl State electoral tickefto make j assurance doubly sure."' See that you do it. i The Raleigh correspondence of the Charlotte Observer says that from inquiring from people in Wake county there will be very " little scratching by Populists or Democrats on the fusion electoral ticket. It should be so in every county in North Carolina. ' Re- that Rbodes had cost the county from $400. to $S00 court cost in two or .three cases.'' Rhodes renlied after a few hot words, "I Feel ltke, SHOOTING THE D H RASCAL'S HEART out. Dr. Kiser is stating facts THAT ARE NOT SO. As we all know, the law allows a4iigh Sheriff of a county to carry a-pistol, bat not for the purpose of shooting mens hearts out who are "TELLING FACTS THAT ABE SOT SO." And if a sheriff cannot control his temper better than this he is an exceedingly dangerous man to li cense to carry a deadly weapon. It would seen we are not only in creasing our taxes, but alsojeop REGISTRATION OF UNQUALIFIED NE GRO voters" would give the State to'McKinley. The importations in Asheville alone, the borne of Boodle Pearson, have been so great and so scandalous as to arouse public iudignation to such a pitch as to secure the call for a public non-partisan meeting. Resolutions demanding vigorous efforts to prevent illegal voting were adopted, aud committees ap pointed to assist the election of ficers. Mr. J. M. Uudger, Jr., voiced public sentiment when ho said: "The States of South Carolina and Tennessee are being ransacked in the importation of fraudulent voters. The tax list shows this fact, but the people are going to the ballot box to see that the citi zens of those States do not vote in Buncombe. The last city election showed that persons voted her who were not residents. e know the fact by what we have seen, and it is absurd to deny that ille gal voting is now atremnted. 1 pretest in the name-of the people and am not influenced by parti sanship m my utterances here." With the theft of a registration book in Raleigh in order to dis trancise 2bo Democratic voters, and this wholesale importation ir. Asheville, the intelligent and hon est majority of the State is brought ace to face with the proposition: Will you sit idly by and permit the knaves and scoundrels, acting under orders of Republican lead ers, thus to rob the people of their franchises, and foist a government of hate and dishonesty upon the State? The campaigu of Ruscll was conceived in iniquity and bom in fraud. By buying delegates and unseating those who could not be bought, Russell's henchmen secured his nomination. What ever of character remained in the Republican party iu North Caro lina walked out of it then, aud the campaigu is now in the hands ot men who are resolved to steal the election just as they stole the nomination. The importation of voters, the "enormous registra tion OF UNQUALIFIED NEGRO VOT ERS," the theft of the registration book in a strong Democratic ward, the bribery and corruption that are seen on everv hand show that m the Republican managers will stop at nothing to gain control of the State. The so-called honest election law drawn by Russell & Co., and the machinery provided bv uu scrupulous Republican clefts, promises a crop of cieanticiraucs if the Democrats do not meet this movement exposed in Raieigh, which doubtless extends all tver tho East, with watchfulness and courage. Thank God we still have white men iu North Carolina, whose fathers and brothers spilled their blood to protect their rights and to avoid subordination to the negro. Many gnUaut old soldiers still shoulder their crutchtH and "show how fields were won." Thes;? men and their sons must and will be early and late at the polls to see that corrupt negroes shall not venture even for Hanna's treasure to defraud the white men - a , of Ncrth Carolina of thtir fran chise.
