Senator MeCreary of Kentucky is an authority on historical inn- dents of the Mexican war, of which he has been atl interested student. Here is a tribute to the courage of Jetlersoii 1 )av is he is fond of telut- uig : Jt was during the Mexican war, ' lie said. "As you snow, iletlerson Iavis had previoiislv t'loM-t with the daughter of Tay lor, who was then iu command ou the Texan border and not in close touch with the White House, just as lh'wey was nut of reach by cable at Manila. The American troops crossed the Ixirder. The Mexicans made trouble, mid Taylor went ahead, and the victories of Palo Alto anil Monterey were won. In the fatuous battle in which Bragg was told to 'load your caution with grape, sir!' Davis, who was then under command of Taylor, went ahead and won a notable victory in a certain part of the held. When he returned Taylor grasped his hand cordially ami after congratu lating him said: "Iiet me tell you sir, that vou displayed lietter judg ment III the selection of a husband for my daughter than I did my self.' " One afternoon during a lull in the bathing demands on a certaiu trans-Atlantic liner, George, the youth who had charge of the live hath rooms used by the saloon pas sengers, decided to take a bath, so he locked himself in one of the room used by the men. Suddenly he was disturbed by a rap at the door, and heard a woman's voice "Honey '. Honey I Are yiiu there!" No reply coming from the room, the latlv spoke again. "Honey, are you there t" As un explanation wan needed, George spoke. "lteg your pardon, lady, but this ain't no beehive ; this is a bath room." In the desert of Fayoom, a gaud; waste to the south of old Cairo, ex cavators have found the great grandfather of all the rhinoceroses. lhey call bun the Arsiuoitber- itim and he has a long pair of horns projecting forwartl, above tho nos trils, ami behind these horns was a pair of smaller ones. Several specimens of this curious I least have been unearthed, a few 1m ines from each individual. Oue lower jaw was fully two feet long. Is it not probable that the Ami noitherium was none other thau the leviathan nieutioued in the Bible f The leviathan has hitherto been thought by some Biblical students to lie the same as the whale, aud by others lie has been identified with the rhinoceros. The description of this terrible beast in the book of Job, however, better suits the strange monster whose remain have been unearthed at Fayoom, la Mrmariam: C1uuieCtllr Har ris.
