Quarterly meeting for Hickory and Morganton stations convened with the Methodist church at Morganton last Saturday' and Sunday. Ministers present, Dr. Moore, P. E., Prof. J. F. Crowell, president of Trinity College, Revs. Bonner, Anderson, Brothers and Payne. Presiding Elder Moore preached Saturday and Sunday, at 11 o'clock each day. to the delight of all who heard him. He is a level headed man and a very strou preacher. to Prol. Crowell preached Sunday night to a packed house, and every one who heard him was de lighted with his sermon. His text was from Daniel, last chapter and part of the last verse. He impressed his hearers at once that he was a man thoroughly conse crated to his important work that of preaching and teaching and that he was following out the scriptural injunction, " Whatso ever the hand fiudeth to do, do it with all thy might," 'and if pluck and consecration are necessary to success, Trinity College will cer tainly prove a success under Prof. CrowelPs presidency. A New Clerk Appointed. Judge Bynum appointed, last week, Mr. H. W. Connelly Clerk of Burke Superior Court, "to suc ceed Mr. S. T. Pearson, who re signed to take the position of cashier of the Piedmont Bank at this place. Mr. Connelly needs no special notice at our hands his acts are all familiar to our people. He is one of the men who have com menced at the bottom round and come up by pluck aud energy, and wherever such men are to be found their record is all the recom menaatiou necessary to secure them places of trust in any de partineut in lite. He tiled his bond before th commissioners, last Monday, ant will qualify in a few days and as same the responsibilities of tin office. The reports of correspondents of the Weekly Crop Bulletin issued by the X. C. Experiment Station and State Weather Service, co operating with the United States Signal Service, show that, during the week ending Friday, October the 4th, there was a deficiency of rain-fall, and average temperature and very much sunshine- No raiu fell excepting light showers on September 30th, and the sky has been nearly cloudless the entire week. Ligh frosts occurred again m the early part of the week but -caused no damage. The nights have been cool with heavy dews while during the day time the temperature has been normal. The large percentage of sunshine has caused the bolls in the cotton fields to open uiore rapidly, except on very large plants. Farmers are now busy gathering the staple, and the season has been very favorable for this important work. No complaint has reached the central office of damage done by thexottou caterpillars ; dry weath er seems somewhat to check their spreadiug. The eom crop is probably ripe enough to gather now in places. The prospects seem to be for continued tine weather aud farmers are in good spirits. Eastern District. Few re ports have been received. The weather has been slightly warmer than in other districts, with little rain aud plenty of sunshine. Central District. Weather very fine veritable Indian sum mer. Cotton picking progressing apidly. Cornj should be nearly aipe enough togather. Western District.
