AUTO BRAKES ON FOUR WHEELS SOON Would Decrease Skidding, Au tomotive Engineers As- % •ert Now Medium-priced automobiles will toon be produced with four-wheel brakes. That ia the concluaion of automotive i-ngineers, baaed on the successful in i n>ductk>n of brakea on all wheels of h hifrh claat American.car and on sev eral European models. Will Decrease Skidding The brakes on the-American car are worked by hydraulic power. But the simple hand jmd foot brakes of today may easily be applied to all four wheels. An 8-shaped arrangement nnder the chassis may be so connected with the brake levers as to apply the pressure both forward and back with the same motion. Application of four-wheel brake* will decrease skidding. That has been proven with the automobiles that are iquippod with brakes on the front as fell as rear wheels. Front Wheels Hold. When the brakes are applied sud denly to the rear wheals of a fast moving car, all the weight and mo mentum of the ear art thrown for ward, and the front wheels grip the pa t «feent. If there it the slightest tun of the steering wheal at that time, the rear wheels will skid dan gerously while the front wheels hold tight Application of brakes on the front wheels at the same time obviate* this danger. As the brake pressure is divided evenly among all four wheels, the weight of the machine Is equally distributed so that the possibility of skidding is diminished. DR. H. B. ROWE Mount Airy, h. C.
