In the old garden there the Spanish bayonet, in our country but a shrub, grown more than 20 feet I high . and Its masses of spiked bios sitms, snowy white, are of enormous I size, and are now in full bloom. The garden fence is of this sub tropical plant, and near it are giant fig trees, loaded with that most luscious fruit, I which is so hard to ship. Wade's shore" is a place where a great many I things can be seen. There are grass huts, some square, some circular, which look exactly like those on Rob inson Crusoe's Island; there aro enor- Imous vines which lace the trees to gether, and there is a walk way under vines, magnolias and myrtles, from the sound side past the quaint old houses towards the Bea, this walk presently ending with startling ab ruptness for a lofty wall of sand at a steep slope, seems to bar the way, but up it we went and saw another world, for In the foreground was a wide stretch of utterly desolate sands, With here and there stubby fragments of, what has once been trees for the sand had overwhelmed the forest. In the middle distance was the sea, and in the background the wide curve ot the "bight" of hook of Cape Lookout sickle shaped which forms a natural harbor of refuge and which for many a year past, has saved stout ships and strong souls. At one end of the hook was the lighthouse, with its checkered pattern of black and white, a land mark by day and at the ether end of the curve the life saving station.
