St. Matthews j To Observe Lent Lent will be observed at St. Mat- i thew's Lutheran church this year by a series of Sunday evening Bible Hours beginning at 7:30. Lent be gan yesterday. Ash Wednesday, and continues until Easter. Pastor Charles Frenzel will .lead the Bible study, but opportunity will be available for both discus sion and for questions. The topics are taken from the last twenty-four hours of the life of Jesus. They follow: March 6: In the Upper Room in Jerusalem, and the Institution of the Lord's Supper. Movie Of New York Shown At Rotary Meeti The Rotary club met in the Me-! thodist Hut last Friday noon. In the interest of encouraging Rotarians to attend the Interna-1 tional Convention in New York in lune, Rev. J. B. McLarty present ed a film of New York scenes. T. L. Nichols made a report of the meeting he attended recently in Asheville when Angus Mitchell, of Australia, president of Rotary In ternational, addressed Rotary mem bers. Others who attended made brief remarks on the address. Robert Curtis, honor student of the month, was a guest of the club. Miss Ruth Taylor was the guest of Ernest Ross and Rev. J. B. McLarty was the guest of Pat Davis. Hicks of Old Fort, became the bride of Daniel Everette Alli j son, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Fred Al lison of Old Fort, Thursday evening i at the Old Fort Baptist Church. The Rev. John Grayson Hicks of Harrodsburg, Kentucky, brother of the bride, officiated at the double ring ceremony. Tall baskets of white gladiolis and ferns flanked the altar behind which two seven-branched lighted candelebra gleamed. Prior to the ceremony Mrs. John G. Hicks, sister-in-law of the bride and William Dalton Jr., brother-in law of the bridegroom, presented a program of wedding music. The bride was given in marriage by her father. She wore a suit of gray gabardine, a gray straw hat trimmed in white, brown and white accessoiies, and a shoulder bouquet of brown orchids. Miss Melba Hicks, sister of the bride, served as maid of honor. She wore a gabardine suit of teal blue with hat to match, and carried white rosebuds. Ervin Allison, brother of the bridegroom, was best man. Ushers were Odell Pressley of Grover, bro ther-in-law of the bride, and Clar ence Chrisawn of Old Fort. Mrs. Allison is a graduate of King's Mountain High School, She j is a leader in youth work at the Old Fort Baptist church. Mr. Allison is a graduate of Old: Fort High School. He served three i years in the Atlantic theatre during | World War II. He is connected with i Clearwater Finishing plant at Old; Fort where they will make their; home after a wedding trip. Miss Greenlee Kiwanis Speaker Roy Davis, president of the Ma rion Kiwanis Club, presided at the regular weekly megting of the club held in the community building Tuesday evening. James Laughlin, program chair man, presented Miss Nina Greenlee, teacher of the .Clinchfield Elemen tary School, as guest speaker for the evening. Miss Greenlee form erly a sergeant in the WAC gave the group a number of observations she had made while stationed in Italy. While in Italy, Miss Greenlee had the opportunity of visiting many places of historic interest, and while at these places made a number of pictures which she used to illus trate her talk. Included among the scenes she was able to portray on the screen the mirrored lakes of the Grotto of the Isle of Capri were outstanding. Miss Greenlee was en thusiastic in her talk of the beauty of this and other places visited. The speaker also discussed the political attitude of the Italian peo ple and described several Communis tic demonstrations she had witness ed. President Davis called a brief business session of the Directors immediately following the adjourn ment of the meeting. rriday Is bet As Prayer Day By Gov. Scott j Raleigh, Feb. 28—Governor Scott called on North Carolinian's today to observe Friday as a "World Day of Prayer." The observance is being sponscr- ! ed by the council of Church Women. Governor Scott said, "I comlmend this observance to all citizens of North Carolina as an occasion for offerings, prayers and petitions to their Heavenly Father; and I urge them, wherever possible, to attend some religious service and beseech God to aid us in establishing lasting peace, good will, and brotherhood everywhere in the world." u, Lenten Services Yesterday was Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. During the Lenten season the services at St. John's Episcopal church will be as follows: Wednesdays, Holy Communion at 10 a. m.; Fridays Evening Prayer and address, except first Friday, at 8 p. m. j Sunday services will be at the usual hours, 8 and 11 a. m. An Indian peace pipe, carved in the shape of a wolf's head of blue j stone and found recently near the j Pacolet River in Polk County, hasj been given to the State Department j of Archives ar.d History. The pipe,j was unearthed by a construction crew grading a road up Howard's Gap at the foot of White Oak Mountain. The site is near the ■ place where Captain Howard de- j feated , the Indians in Polk County j in a pitched battle. * .
