Forest Fires Burn 599 Acres The Asheville District Office of the Division of Forestry of the De partment of Conservation and De velopment reports that during March a total of 84 reportable forest fires burned in the eight cooperating counties in district one. These 84 fires burned a total of 599 acres of privately owned forest land in the district. The cause of those fires are listed as follows: Incendiarism—36 fires or 42 per cent. Debris or Brush Burning—20 fires or 24 per cent. Smokers—15 fires or 18 per cent. Miscellaneous—5 fires or 6 per cent. For 33 Years Your Jeweler Only Genuine Material* Used Work Guaranteed L. D. The responsible parties were ap prehended and reprimanded on 60 per cent of these fires that occur red this month. - ' In McDowell County, M. U. Mar lowe is County Forest Warden. Dur ing the month of March, 14 forest fires occurred in this eounty. The majority of these fires were appar ently caused by careless smokers. Forest users and the public in | general are urged to be extremely careful so as not to start forest I fires, and are urged to secure a permit to do any burning within . 500 feet of any forest land. The time to | do this burning is in the late after noon and preferably when wind con i ditions. are calm.
