Social News Miss Elizabeth Whitten, Editor Office Phone 64 Residence 59-X Engagement Announced MARION GARDEN CLUB OFFICERS ELECTED FOR COMING YEAR The Marion Garden club reelect ed Mrs. R. E. McCall president for the coming year at its meeting held Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs, C. Y. Banning with Mrs. R. C. Spratt, assistant hostess. Fourteen members and two visitors were pre sent. Other officers elected were: Mrs. \Y. S. Shiflet, vice president; Mrs. I. A. McLain, secretary, and Mrs. W. G. Wiatt, treasurer. Mrs. E. F. Haire presented a pro gram on "Amaryllis." Mrs. A. C. Hewitt. Jr., gave a discussion on, ■"Plant Harmones." Mrs. W. S. Shif let reported on the State Garden School held in Asheville last week. The President announced that the State Garden club will meet in Charlotte on May 9. Mrs. W. S. Shiflet presented a flower arrangement appropriate for spring. Mrs. C. L. Self presented one for summer and Mrs. A. C. Hewitt, Sr., fall. Mrs. Shiflet was winner of an Easter contest. Visitors present at the meeting were Mrs. S. R. Perkins and Mrs. ■Carl Whiteside. Miss Marie Jarrett Chosen Miss Marion In Easter Parade Miss Marie Jarrett was chosen Miss Marion in the Easter Parade sponsored by the Marion Junior Wo man's club last Friday evening. Miss Margaret Honeycutt won se cond place and Miss Doris Nunn, third. o Mrs. Paul Story Bridge Club Hostess Mrs. P. J. Story was hostess to bridge club with a three-course luncheon at her home on Augusta avenue last Thursday. Arrange ments of pansies centered the tables. Lilacs and jonquils were also us ed in decorating. Mrs. Frank Gold smith won club high score prize and Mrs. William Hagna, visitor's high. Others playing were Mrs. Harry McCall. Mrs. Joseph L. Noyes, Mrs.' Sam Yancey, Mrs. J. N. Morris and Mrs. Otis L. Broyhill. o Mrs. Morris Hostess With Dessert-Bridge Mrs. Glenn Morris entertained her club with a dessert-bridge at heri home last Friday evening. Roses and azaleas formed a pretty background for two tables of con-1 tract. Mrs. Frank Goldsmith won high score prize and Mrs. Carter Hudgins, second high. Others playing were Mrs. John; Gilkey, Mrs. David Blanton, Mrs. J.' E. Neal, Jr., Mrs. Lloyd Miller, Mrs. William Ross and Miss Elise Van Landingham. Legion Auxiliary Plans Birthday Party | ] American Legion Auxiliary met' in the community building Tuesday' evening with Mrs. J. E. Melton, pre- j siding. Nine members were present, j Following the business session Mrs. Watson Wilson, Americanism chairman, spoke on, "A Square j Deal For Every Child." Plans were j made for a Legion birthday party to be held April 23 at the commu nity building with dancing after wards. Hat-Rack Club Plans Coming Year Incoming officers of the Hat-Rack club, met with members of the Adult Advisory Board of the Teen-Age club Monday to make plans for the coming year. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Walker, directors, were also pre sent. The new officers are: Hilda Good man, president; David Finley, vice president;, Laura Joan Keeter, sec retary, and Pollyanna Atkins, treas urer. The Hat-Rack club is the major project of the Marion Junior Wo man's club this year. o OPEN HOUSE Open house will be held on Easter Sunday afternoon from one until six o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Hemphill at Glenwood. Relatives and friends are invited to call between those hours. 'Mrs. Simpson Wedded To R. T. Yoakum The wedding of Mrs. Belle S. Simpson of Marion, to Robert Tay lor Yoakum of Asheville, N. C. and Lone Mountain, Tennessee, was sol jemnized Tuesday evening, April 12, at eight o'clock, in the Pastor's. Study of the Central Methodist Church of Asheville. The Rev. Lee ■ F. Tuttle officiated. Mrs. Woodrow Greene Has Dessert-Bridge Mrs. Woodrow Greene entertain ed with a dessert-bridge Friday evening for members of her club and other guests. Azaleas and cherry blossoms carried out a spring color note. In the games Mrs. D. N. Lonon won high score prize and Mrs. J. G. Auerhamer, second high. j Others playing were Mrs. B. A.
